The Real Reason Lab-Grown Diamonds Are More Affordable

It is almost impossible to distinguish between lab-grown and natural diamonds without the right knowledge or even with a jeweler's loupe. They share the same characteristics, look stunning, and shine brightly. So why are lab-grown diamonds 60% to 80% less expensive than diamonds that are mined? To understand why, first, you need to understand the process used to create  Lab Grown Diamonds in Dallas

How Are Diamonds Grown in a Lab?

Lab-grown diamonds are produced in a lab under strictly controlled conditions using technology and the same process as naturally occurring diamonds, but in a much shorter amount of time. There are two primary methods for producing beautiful lab-grown diamonds: Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) and High-Pressure High-Temperature (HPHT). Both techniques begin with a diamond seed, which is a tiny fragment of a real diamond.

The diamond seed is placed in a carbon-rich environment during the HPHT process, where it is subjected to extreme heat and pressure similar to that found under the Earth’s crust. This heat causes the carbon to melt and stick to the seed. Then, layer by layer, it helps grow the seed into a larger diamond crystal.

The diamond seed is surrounded by a vacuum chamber in the CVD process. At extremely high temperatures, it is exposed to a gas plasma that is rich in carbon. Carbon atoms then cling to the diamond seed as the plasma disintegrates. This gradually builds and strengthens the diamond's structure.

How is this relevant to the pricing structure of mined diamonds vs lab-grown diamonds?  Let us tell you why.

What Makes Lab-Grown Diamonds More Affordable

Production Method

Because lab-grown diamonds are produced in labs using technology, manufacturers can control growth conditions. This production efficiency guarantees that lab-grown diamonds will always be an affordable option, as the production method reduces overhead costs.

Scientific Innovation

Technological developments also have an impact on lab diamond prices. Lab diamond manufacturers can now scale production rapidly because of improvements in diamond synthesis. That is why lab diamonds benefit from ongoing innovation, guaranteeing a steady and affordable market supply.

Direct Supply Chain

There are several middlemen in the natural diamond market, including distributors, retailers, and miners. This is why the final cost of a natural diamond is greatly increased by the markup added at each stage. On the other hand, because there are fewer parties involved and a shorter supply chain, lab diamonds cost less, and buyers are spared the high markups.

Ethical & Sustainable Sourcing

Nowadays, a lot of customers favor products, including diamonds, that don’t cause a detrimental effect on the environment and society. Lab diamonds offer a more ethical option without compromising quality, as they do not involve diamond mining, which relies heavily on labor and environmental exploitation. They are made in controlled lab conditions, unlike natural diamonds, which need extensive mining. This ethical sourcing demand by conscious buyers contributes to the competitiveness of lab diamond prices, keeping them affordable and accessible.
