Starting IAS (UPSC Civil Services) preparation is a big decision. Before you even dive in, here are some key things you must make sure you know, take expert help to understand the level of challenge:
- Understand the syllabus for exam may not be enough because questions are asked with a different perspective
Know the structure—Prelims, Mains, and Interview. Go through the syllabus and previous years’ question papers to see what UPSC actually asks. - Long-term commitment is required but more than that there should be strong Motivation.
Preparation usually takes 1–2 years with consistency. It’s a marathon, not a sprint. - Admitting yourself at a good IAS coaching centre may not be enough - you need expert guidance.
- Right strategy matters more than hard work
Smart planning, limited resources, and regular revision are more important than studying everything. - There is nothing like Right strategy – It is more about what suits you depending on your background, previous preparation,
- Choose optional subject wisely
Your optional can make or break your rank. Consider interest, syllabus length, and availability of guidance. - NCERTs are non-negotiable to strengthen your Fundamentals but they are not the be all and the be end.
Strong fundamentals from NCERT books are essential before moving to advanced sources. - Current affairs are crucial – focus on basics
Daily newspaper reading (like The Hindu or Indian Express) is a habit you must build early. - Answer writing and test practice are essential
Reading alone won’t help. Practice MCQs and Mains answers regularly. - Mental discipline and patience are key
Self-doubt, fatigue, and comparison are common. Stay focused and believe in your process. - Avoid social media advice – advice from less qualified sources may be risky.
- Health is wealth - Remember it is not like any other exam, your preparation can extend upto 4 years and optimum results will need sound health.
