For the second consecutive season, the Minnesota Timberwolves are heading to the Western Conference Finals — and they did it in dominant fashion. With a 121-110 victory over the Golden State Warriors in Game 5, the Wolves closed out the series 4-1, riding an inspired team effort fueled by veteran leadership, defensive tenacity, and a relentless paint attack.
A Statement Win Built on Team Play
The Timberwolves didn't need a last-second hero or miracle comeback. What they showed in Game 5 was a model of playoff poise — a mature, efficient performance from a team that looks ready to take the next step.
Leading the way was Julius Randle, who delivered a near-perfect offensive performance with 29 points on 13-of-18 shooting. Randle played under control, exploited mismatches, and served as the Wolves' offensive engine in key stretches. Anthony Edwards continued his ascent as a bona fide superstar, tallying 22 points and a playoff career-high 12 assists.
Not to be outdone, Rudy Gobert provided the kind of rim protection and interior presence that has defined Minnesota's identity all year, finishing with 17 points, 8 rebounds, and several game-changing defensive stands.
Mike Conley: The Steady Hand
While younger stars powered the scoreboard, it was 18-year veteran Mike Conley who set the tone early and calmed the tempo throughout. Conley knocked down 4-of-6 three-pointers, added 16 points and 8 rebounds, and acted as a second coach on the floor. His timing, positioning, and communication were invaluable.
“He’s always in the right spot,” said head coach Chris Finch. “What he gives us doesn’t always show up in the box score, but tonight, it did.”
Paint Domination: The Key to Victory
The Timberwolves scored a franchise postseason record 72 points in the paint, outmuscling a Warriors team that simply didn’t have the interior defense to match Minnesota’s size and strength. It was the most paint points Golden State has allowed in any game this season.
Minnesota, which ranked just 20th in the league in paint scoring during the regular season, completely flipped the script in Game 5.
Golden State's Summer of Questions
For the Warriors, the end of the road came amid injuries and inconsistency. The absence of Steph Curry for the final four games — including Game 5 — loomed large. Without him, the offense lacked spacing and rhythm. Jimmy Butler, acquired at the trade deadline, provided a mid-season spark but struggled in the final two games, finishing with just 17 points on 4-of-11 shooting in Game 5.
Bright spots did exist for Golden State, particularly rookie Brandin Podziemski (28 points) and Jonathan Kuminga (26 points off the bench), but it wasn’t enough to overcome the Wolves’ onslaught.
Now, the Warriors head into an offseason filled with questions. Will they retain Kuminga? Can they land another high-impact center? Will Steph, Butler, and company get the complementary pieces they need to contend once more?
Fans and Rivals Show Respect
Despite the elimination, the series ended with mutual admiration. Warriors fans tipped their hats to Minnesota’s effort, and Timberwolves supporters expressed gratitude for a hard-fought series. Across social media, comments echoed the sentiment:
“Much respect for the Wolves — Ant and Randle are the real deal.”
“This series could’ve gone differently with a healthy Steph, but Minnesota earned this.”
Looking Ahead: Western Conference Finals
With this win, the Timberwolves have sent a message to the rest of the league: they’re not just a talented young team — they’re ready to win now. And with their mix of elite defense, evolving offensive chemistry, and veteran guidance, they’re poised to challenge for the Western Conference crown.
As Charles Barkley quipped postgame: “The one thing about Father Time — it ain’t ever gonna lose.” The Wolves may have taken that message to heart, outlasting and outworking a seasoned Warriors squad that simply ran out of gas.
