University education is very expensive - especially in the United States - so it\'s no wonder that scholarships are in high demand. Being well informed about what opportunities there are, why universities offer scholarships.
How you can maximize your chances of getting one, will help you better cope with this part of the university admissions process.
We have decided to write a series of articles dedicated to the topic of scholarships: in the first two we focused on the United States and on what are the requirements that a student must have to obtain a scholarship for academic or sporting merits. With this third and final article, however, we move to the UK, where scholarships are managed differently.
HOW SCHOLARSHIPS WORK IN THE UK:
UK universities generally do not issue particularly large scholarships. In the event that one is offered, it is usually because students request it after having received an offer from a university and having chosen it as final. The other option is for universities to award the scholarship based on personal details such as nationality and final exam results, once these are available.
Sometimes scholarships are used as an incentive to encourage a student to accept a certain university as their first choice and, in these cases, the scholarship may be included in the terms of the offer. The number of scholarships available has always been limited as there were no tuition fees in the UK in the past, however scholarships are on the rise lately and there are now several being offered by UK universities. WHAT IF I AM AN INTERNATIONAL STUDENT?
UK universities have an interest in offering scholarships to students of many nationalities because in this way they can promote diversity within their student body.
This is a criterion that is not very common: in the United States, for example, scholarships are obtained for academic merit or for some type of athletic ability.
Students from Latin America, Africa and Asia can often benefit from this type of scholarship. In general, the value is relatively low: £ 1000 to £ 3000 is deducted from the annual tuition.
IS THERE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF DEGREE?
The type of degree doesn\'t make much of a difference when it comes to scholarships in the UK, however the trend is to offer them mostly to postgraduate students and less to students in undergraduate programs.
The UK Council for International Student Affairs states: "There are a limited number of scholarships and they are aimed at specific targets. The processes for accessing it are very competitive and most, though not all, are aimed at students of postgraduate programs. For university students who still have to obtain a first level degree, scholarships (understood as sums paid out in cash and partial tax exemptions) are rarer ”.
ARE THERE ANY MERIT-BASED SCHOLARSHIPS?
Some universities offer scholarships for merit which, however, are aimed at students who have already started their education at university and are based on the marks obtained by the student in the first year. If the results of the first year are very good, the university could offer the student a scholarship for the second or subsequent years.
SPORTS SCHOLARSHIPS IN UK:
The university admissions culture in the UK focuses on academic achievement and applicants are expected to meet the academic excellence requirements for their chosen university even if they are outstanding athletes. It is true that sporting merit is much more valued in the United States than in the United Kingdom.

While in the United States sports scholarships are offered to students before they have accepted their place at the university, in the United Kingdom a student must instead apply for them only after having applied for admission to the university through UCAS.
