Staplers are medical devices used for internal surgeries, replacing sutures. They close wounds or incisions quickly and are less painful. They are often used in invasive surgeries and used to close wounds with tight skin against the bone during operations where organs are removed, or parts are reconnected to internal organs.

What are surgical staplers?

A surgical stapler is mostly made of plastic material and a disposable cartridge of surgical staples. They come in disposable and reusable models. They look a lot like industrial or construction staplers and are made to insert and close various staples at once. Surgical staplers are used internally to seal tissues during surgery.

They remove a part of an organ i.e., re-sectioning, sealing, and cutting through organs and tissues or tran-sectioning and creating connections amongst structures. The most common types of surgical staplers used for surgeries are:

Linear staplers

A linear stapler is used for connecting tissues during minimally invasive surgeries and for removing an organ. The process of using linear staplers involves sealing the open wound to prevent any bleeding after the surgery is performed.

Circular staplers

They are used for surgeries that involve the digestive tract from the throat to the colon. The fire two staples from a circular cartridge. This circular layout of the stapler allows a connection of two sections of the intestine or a different tube-like structure once the portion has been removed.

Skin staplers

They are meant for single use only and if used multiple times it might lead to an infection or cross-contamination. Therefore, a skin stapler is called a single disposable skin stapler used at the end of the surgery or treatment of regular wound closure.

Tips to take care of yourself during and after surgery

Patients should pay a lot of attention to the medical stapler used in their skin to avoid any chances of infection. If you have undergone surgery or planning to undergo one, you should carefully follow your doctor’s instructions. You should also avoid removing any of your dressings unless specified by the doctor.  Rinse the area where the surgical procedure has been performed and keep it clean.

After the treatment, your doctor will help you out with when you should dress your wound to prevent any infection.

Conclusion

All the staplers can be used for surgery and the correct use is a crucial step for the success of the operation. These staplers also help prevent complications once the surgeon masters the right method of using the stapler.
