How Autism Education And Activity Help your kids
I've learned some important rules when creating activities for students with autism. In the clinic, during the sessions, we always focus on particular skills to help my clients continue to learn, grow and thrive. In this Article, Dr. Nakul Kaushik best consulted at Rehab Buddy Child Development Centre and Autism Research Institute, one of the leading centers for autism treatment. Developing these ideas and sharing them with you has been very enriching and inspired the creation of my group, Awesome Autism Activity.
Here are some key ideas to keep in mind when creating activities for children with autism.
Games and activities should be based on children's interests. If your child is interested in a particular cartoon, you should include characters from that series in the activity. If there is a topic your child enjoys talking about, the game should consist of elements of that topic. We are all interested in activities that make us happy. Of course, the same applies to children with autism. Activities must be adaptable and meet sensory needs. If your child doesn't like loud noises, don't do the activity too loud. However, if your goal is to familiarise your child with different sounds and volume levels, the game should keep that goal in mind.3 All activities should focus on increasing and improving communication such as: Introducing new vocabulary, working on conversational skills, practicing speech, and teaching proper body language during dialogue.
As you interact with your child, consider whether the activity will help them improve their concentration and attention. This will probably happen naturally if he is interested in the activity or topic.5 Many children with autism struggle with executive ability. So try to focus your activities on organization and time management and understanding what steps need to be taken to complete the task.
Independence is key. Encourage, practice, practice, practice as your child learns new skills.7. Activities should focus on real-life lessons, as they are not easy to take turns sharing. This is a video I made using a fun distraction activity.
8. Problem-solving is a life skill and may need to be learned in stages. Activities should focus on concepts such as what is missing, what is required to complete this game, how to solve this puzzle, what clues to look for, etc.
