Introduction:

If you are in the food business—whether it is a small kitchen or a large factory—you know how important food safety is. Consumers are not just looking for taste, they also want to know that what they are eating is completely clean, safe and reliable. That is why there are many food safety standards available in the market.

One of the major ones is FSSC22000—a comprehensive certification scheme. But how is it different from other standards like ISO22000, HACCP, BRC or SQF?

1. What is FSSC 22000?

The full form of FSSC 22000 is Food Safety System Certification 22000. This is an international food safety certification scheme recognised by the GFSI (Global Food Safety Initiative).

It is based on the standard called ISO 22000, but includes additional requirements—such as Pre-Requisite Programs (PRPs), food fraud prevention, food defense and allergen control.

It is specifically designed for food manufacturers, processors and packaging companies.

2. What is ISO 22000?

ISO 22000 is a global food safety system (FSMS) standard that ensures that an organisation identifies and controls its food safety risks. It incorporates the principles of HACCP.

However, ISO 22000 is not recognised by the GFSI—so it may be a limited option for international brands.

3. What is HACCP?

HACCP is not a certification, but a method for identifying and controlling risks in food production. It is the foundation of standards such as ISO 22000 and FSSC 22000.

It is simple and useful for small food businesses, but certifications such as FSSC 22000 or BRC are more suitable for internationally recognised or larger brands.

4. What is BRC (British Retail Consortium)?

BRCGS, formerly known as BRC, is a food safety standard recognised by GFSI.

It focuses more on product safety, quality and legal regulations, and covers a number of important aspects such as supplier approval, traceability, labelling and internal audits.

It is particularly popular with large retailers and international suppliers.

5. What is SQF (Safe Quality Food)?

SQF is also a GFSI-accredited certification, especially popular in North America and Australia.

It focuses on both food safety and quality, and offers level-wise certification (e.g. Level 1—basic, Level 2—safety, Level 3—quality).

It is a common choice for businesses dealing with US clients such as Walmart or Costco.

Recommendations for your business

·  Looking for international accreditation? → FSSC 22000

·  UK or EU retail demand? → BRC

·  Planning to sell to the USA? → SQF

·  Small business, first step? → HACCP or ISO 22000, then FSSC 22000

Summary

Food safety isn’t just about rules—it’s about trust and responsibility. While FSSC 22000 gives you both system-strength and GFSI-accreditation, ISO, HACCP, BRC, and SQF are particularly useful in their respective areas.

The right choice is the one that matches your customers, sector, and business goals.
