Zakat is one of the five pillars of Islam that needs to be paid for being a Muslim. The way a coin is incomplete without both sides, a Muslim is incomplete without following any single pillar of Islam.

You will be punished for not paying Zakat equally when you leave the Salah intentionally. But Islam has never been a strict religion and always builds a better society. Zakat doesn't need to be paid by every Muslim in every circumstance.

There are always certain criteria for a Muslim to determine whether he is liable. Muslims who do not pay Zakat are punished in many verses in the Quran. And this is emphasized by the Sunnah of Hazrat Muhammad ( P.B.U.H)

Punishment for Not Paying Zakat

The failure to pay Zakat will leave you with spiritual and material consequences in the worldly life, and there is also a different punishment in the life hereafter.

Spiritual consequences may include agitation and frustration, and material consequences include dissatisfaction even with many possessions.

According to the Quran and Sunnah, here are the punishments for not paying Zakat

Facing Punishment in the Afterlife

The Quran (9:34-35) says the wealth of the person who refuses to pay Zakat will be burnt in hell and used to mark their foreheads, flanks, and backs as a symbol of greed.

It's a painful punishment on the day of judgment and a warning to those who accumulate wealth but refuse to spend it for Allah.

Judged as selfish

The Quran (3:180) warns us that those who withhold Allah's blessings and gifts out of greed and selfishness will be punished on the Day of Judgment. The things they hoard will be tied to their necks like a collar, and they will be held accountable for their actions.

Allah is the true owner of everything, and we should be grateful for our blessings and use them to please Him.

Being held accountable on the Day of Judgment

The Prophet (Peace Be Upon Him) added that whoever is liable and refuses to pay Zakat, then his wealth will turn into a bald poisonous male snake with two black spots over the eyes on the Day of Resurrection.

The snake will encircle his neck and bite his cheeks and say, 'I am your wealth, I am your treasure.'" (Sunan Ibn Majah 1879)

Tidings of Painful Punishment

In Islam, there aren't many places that mention the punishment for not paying Zakat. At the same time, many verses and hadith emphasize the importance of fulfilling the obligation.

The Quran (9:34) highlights the importance of paying Zakat by declaring the tidings of painful punishment for hoarding wealth.

Punishment for Not Paying Zakat in This World

The punishment for not paying Zakat can take many forms, ranging from financial difficulties to social and legal consequences.

Decreased Blessings and Barakah:

Failing to pay Zakat can decrease blessings and barakah in wealth and overall life. This is because Zakat is meant to purify and increase wealth, and neglecting this obligation can lead to negative consequences.

Financial Losses and Hardships:

Neglecting Zakat can also result in financial difficulties, as one may not receive the blessings and increase in wealth that comes with fulfilling this obligation. Additionally, Allah may put a person through trials and tribulations as a test of their faith.

Social and Legal Consequences:

Sometimes, not paying Zakat can also have social and legal consequences. In Muslim countries, for example, failure to pay Zakat can result in fines or imprisonment.

Strained relationships:

Neglecting Zakat can also strain relationships with one's family, friends, and community. Zakat is a communal obligation, and neglecting it can negatively affect the wider community.

Final words

Notably, these punishments are not meant to scare or intimidate people but to emphasize the importance of fulfilling Zakat's obligations.

Allah is merciful and forgiving; repentance and making amends for not paying Zakat can lead to forgiveness and redemption.
