What Should an Instructor Check First?

The first few minutes of a lesson can reveal a lot.

Instead of immediately following a fixed refresher plan, an instructor can watch how the driver approaches real road situations. How are the mirrors being used? Is the vehicle positioned correctly? How does the driver handle intersections? What happens when traffic changes unexpectedly?

These observations can help identify the actual starting point.

This matters because adult drivers arrive with different levels of experience. Someone who has recently driven may only need help with a few specific areas. A person returning after a long break may need more time to rebuild comfort and familiarity.

Questions can also help. A driver's history, time away from driving, and concerns can give the instructor useful context before deciding what to practise.

From there, lessons can be adjusted instead of following the same sequence for everyone.

There is also another area worth checking: road knowledge. Rules and road conditions may change while someone is away from driving, so instructors may need to identify knowledge gaps as well.
