Moving to a new home can be stressful no matter what time of year you decide to do it. But the season you choose to move in can impact how your move goes. Here's what you need to know about the pros and cons of moving in spring, summer, fall, or winter.

Spring

Springtime is one of the most popular seasons for moving. The weather is getting nicer, kids are about to be out of school for summer break, and many people are relocating for new jobs. Here are some of the key things to know about moving in spring:

Weather - One of the best parts of moving in spring is that you don't have to deal with extreme cold, snow, or ice like you would in winter. But spring weather can still be unpredictable with rain showers. Be prepared with tarps and plastic covers when loading and unloading trucks in case of rain.Demand - Competition for movers and truck rentals is high in spring. Prices are often higher and availability is more limited. Book early to ensure you get what you need.Kids - If you have school-age children, a spring move means they won't have to change schools mid-year. You'll also have the summer for them to get acclimated before starting classes in the fall.Allergies - If you or your family members suffer from seasonal allergies, they may flare up with more pollen in the air during spring. Consider taking medication before and during move days. WebMD provides tips for dealing with spring allergies.

Summer

Summer is understandably an active moving season with kids out of school. Pros and cons include:

Scheduling - With kids home from school, you can more easily pack and prepare the house for a move. But also make sure to work around any summer camps or vacations.Heat - Moving in the dog days of summer can be sweltering and stressful, both while packing and on moving days. Stay hydrated and take frequent breaks.Rush - Summertime may be convenient for families, but it's also popular with others. Competition for movers is high. Book early or you may not get ideal dates/times.Costs - Peak season means peak prices. Expect to pay more for movers and truck rentals during the summer. But the costs may be worth it for convenience.

Fall

As kids go back to school, fall brings its own considerations:

Weather - Though not as intense as summer, fall can still be hot at first. But it cools down by late fall, so be prepared with appropriate clothing and supplies.Prices - With cooler temps comes lower prices. Fall is still busy but costs for movers and trucks are generally not as high versus summer.School - Moving between school years means fewer disruptions for kids. Get settled before the new school year ramps up.Holidays - Late fall includes Thanksgiving and other holidays. Plan your move so it doesn't conflict with any major events or travel plans.

Winter

Moving when there's snow and ice brings unique challenges:

Cold - Sub-freezing temperatures make moving difficult. You may get fatigued faster working in the cold. Have warm gear ready. REI provides tips on dressing for cold weather.Dangerous roads - Snow and ice lead to dangerous driving conditions for movers and rental trucks. Be prepared for delays if the weather gets bad. Check AccuWeather forecasts regularly.Costs - While demand is lower, winter moves can incur extra fees for snow removal, salting driveways, etc. Factor these costs in.Holidays - Moving between Thanksgiving and New Year’s? Scheduling movers will be tricky with holiday vacations.

No matter when you decide to move, proper planning and preparation will help ensure a smooth transition. Check weather forecasts regularly and have backup supplies ready for any scenario. And don't forget to schedule shipping to India if that's part of your upcoming move!
