Fruit trees should be pruned every year after they finish bearing fruit. This will help maintain tree health and also encourage further fruit production. Pests can easily enter and make themselves at home in cracks, holes, and hollowed-out parts of the tree that are neglected during pruning. You don't want to invite critters like birds, raccoons, and insects to move in. Fruit tree pruning is done in 3 basic stages: Selection, Thinning, and Deadwooding (removing broken and dead branches).
