Do you work in healthcare or a healthcare-related field? All licensed or certified medical professionals that may encounter emergency medical situations should have an Advanced Cardiac Life Support certification. An ACLS class will help in you improve patient outcomes by giving you the skills and knowledge to perform or assist in the performance of advanced care.. Life-saving techniques can benefit anyone who might even have the slightest chance of encountering emergencies as a part of their job. If you work in any of the following professions, here are some reasons to consider getting an ACLS certification.

Doctors

Doctors are the most obvious candidates for getting an ACLS certification. However, it’s more than just emergency room doctors. Nearly all doctors can benefit from taking an ACLS course. Whether you work in urgent care, family medicine, oncology, or you’re an OB/GYN, you can benefit from advanced life-saving techniques. While chances may be small that an emergency will arise, it’s best to have the necessary skills and knowledge to respond confidently on the off chance that you actually have to use them. Many doctors may even find that their employer requires an ACLS certification.

Home Nurses

Like doctors, emergency room nurses are likely required to have ACLS training. However, there are many other types of nurses who can benefit from this certification. Home nurses, especially for elderly or long-term patients, should be equipped with advanced life-saving training. They may be the first or only person able to assist their patient when something potentially fatal, such as a heart attack, happens. When they know how to administer proper care, they can take action until first responders arrive.

First Responders

Speaking of first responders, paramedics, firefighters, and other EMS personnel can all benefit from the skills and knowledge an ACLS class offers. They are often the first trained professionals to give aid to a patient in an emergency, and their ability to provide care could be the difference in creating positive patient outcomes. Similarly, first responders can also benefit from Pediatric Advanced Life Support. A PALS course is similar to an ACLS course but focuses on caring for infants and children when they need it most. There are a number of vital differences in cardiac emergencies between children and adults, and first responders should have as much life-saving knowledge as possible to perform their jobs to the best of their abilities.

School Nurses

School nurses aren’t likely to see many cardiac arrests, but it’s still possible that students could have a potentially fatal cardiac event Again, it is better to have the skills and not need them when a high school athlete during practice or a P.E. class needs advanced life-saving techniques. The young athlete’s outcome could be much worse if the school nurse can’t respond with the necessary training. School nurses should also be prepared to respond to medical emergencies involving teachers, which may require advanced life-saving skills.

Pharmacists

Many in hospital rapid response teams include a pharmacist. Their role is to provide the correct resuscitation medications, drawn up in the correct dose, and at the right time. Most pharmacists in hospitals are required to maintain their ACLS certifications and for those pharmacists that work outside the hospital, taking an ACLS course and maintaining their ACLS certification is also important so that they can provide ACLS after BLS if they find themselves in a position to provide care.
