Why Narrative Conventions Are Important?

Do you know the importance of narrative convention to be a good writer? Well, the narrative convention list includes the elements to enhance your write up. The list of the narrative convention includes characters, plot, point of view, setting and themes. These elements are also used in the film. These all elements together make a working masterpiece, if used appropriately. To use them in your work it is important to know about the conventions of a narrative. Let’s understand narrative conventions with examples. 

Character 

Characters are important in the story to grasp the attention of the readers. Characters are categorized into- Protagonist and Antagonist. The protagonist is the real hero of the story or the movie revolves around him. Whereas, the antagonist defames the protagonist with dirty tricks. The antagonist creates a hurdle for the hero but they both are equally influential to the story. Thus, the character is an important element in the narrative convention as it boosts up the interest of the audience.

Plot

The plot is the dominating element to make the work productive. Well, a structured plot with a tragedy is mostly liked by the readers. it is important to know your reader’s taste. A good plot must go through orientation, complications, climax and denouement because all this creates mystery and suspense to make the work be most read. Well, suspense and mystery must be created in a good time frame and must not last long so that it becomes boring for the readers. A good example is the Oedipus complex by Sophocles. 

Setting 

The setting of the story must relate to the events taking place in the story to reflect realism in your work. It is an element that binds together all other elements. Setting can be of two types in narrative convention-time setting and place setting. But it is significant to maintain the balance and connectivity between the setting and the place where events are taking place. 

Point of view

Narratives can be written with the first-person view, second-person view and third-person view. It must be used carefully and do not mix the different points of views in the work as it will be clumsy and chaotic to be read. In the first person, 'I' and 'WE' are used; in the second person, the narrator is the speaker himself and can use 'YOU'; third person, ‘THEY’, ‘HE’, ‘SHE’ is used.
