Kupe couldn’t sleep. The rain was hitting the windows harder and harder; almost as if it was purposely trying to keep him awake.
‘The island of Motunui looks beautiful tonight,’ Kupe declared to himself whilst looking out of his bedroom window.

He was about to turn towards his bed, and attempt what felt like his hundredth try at sleeping that night - but a light from a distance caught his attention. There was someone else awake, and with that realisation - the rain stopped.

Kupe headed towards the glistening moonlight as he passed the sleeping village. He felt the cold grains of sand in between his toes and soon discovered a burnt out camp fire. Kupe wondered how the rain allowed the fire to exist in the first place. A voice crept up from behind that took him by surprise.

‘Finally, what took you so long?’

A lady appeared that on the surface looked old and frail - but the wide eyes and smile reflected so much life in her.

‘Well don’t just stand there young man, help me board that boat over there,’ ordered the old lady whilst pointing to a damaged wooden boat.

‘Wait, aren’t you the village crazy lady?’

The old lady picked up a wooden stick and whacked it on Lupe’s back.

‘Ouchhhh … why did you do that?’

‘Young man, don’t you know it’s rude to call a woman crazy? I am what you call … curious.’

‘Well I don’t care what you call it; I refuse to board any boats with you. Now I'm heading back home. Goodbye curious CRAZY lady.’

Kupe turned his back on the old lady and started to make his way back up the hill towards his house. He must have walked only ten steps before the old lady said something to stop him dead in his tracks.

‘Happy birthday Kupe.’

Kupe immediately turned. He was speechless.

‘You always wondered if today was your actual birthday haven’t you – ever since I sent you that birthday card six years ago today? Please tell your adopted parents I did not mean to confuse you, I just wanted to remind you that as you grow older, you are destined to do great things. And now today - on your sixteenth birthday - I have the honour of making you aware of who you are.’

‘So what are you trying to say? Are you my mother?’

The old lady picked up her stick and whacked Lupe in the back again.

‘Do not be ridiculous boy. I would never go near your father in that way, ever.’

‘My father? You know who my father is?’

‘I do – and so does my friend, the ocean.’

The old lady turned to face the ocean and started to sway her hips back and forth. The water began to separate into two sections as a small boat positioned in the middle dragged towards them.

‘H-How are you doing that?’

The old lady ignored Kupe. The boat was getting closer and closer, until it struck a rock really hard. A loud scream echoed in the sky as a giant hook landed on the beach followed by a large rolling Demigod. He stood up and dusted off the sand whilst cursing to himself. The old lady intentionally cleared her throat to get his attention.

‘MOANA.’

‘You’re late Maui, typical.’

‘Has it really been sixteen years?’

‘It has indeed old friend. I kept my promise to your late wife, and now you need to fulfil your promise. Kupe has learnt the humble ways of a villager for the past sixteen years, but it’s now time for him to learn the ways of a Demigod.’

Moana then grabbed Kupe by his arm as he was stood in shock.

‘Kupe meet Maui. He is a Demigod – but more importantly, he is your father.’

Moana then turned to Maui and simply concluded with –

‘you’re welcome.’
