Are you starting to explore upgrading your handgun? There are some common mistakes you might want to avoid to save time and money. Choosing the right accessories for a Glock 19 can improve your overall shooting experience, but if you load it up with accessories that don’t fit your shooting style, you aren’t doing much. Here are three mistakes to avoid as a beginning modder.

Mistake 1: Not Addressing Your Problems

There may be upgrades you don’t need for your shooting needs. Meanwhile, other upgrades were practically designed with your needs in mind. Focus on what you actually care about, not what’s the “coolest” mod of the month.

Just because someone else uses a compensator doesn’t mean you should have one. Depending on your goals, a different muzzle device may make more sense. When you upgrade your handgun, upgrade it with your needs in mind. If you are getting a SIG P365 threaded barrel, know which muzzle device will benefit your shooting the most.

Mistake 2: Ignoring Ergonomics

Another common mistake is ignoring ergonomics. Ergonomics and comfort go hand in hand, and if your handgun isn’t comfortable to hold, it’s harder to control. There are plenty of accessories to help with this.

Don’t skip out on getting magazine base plates that extend the grip, making it easier to hold the pistol securely and manage recoil. A flared Glock 43X magwell can make reloading much easier, allowing you to slam a mag home without looking. A slide with deeper serrations gives you a better grip for when you rack the slide or do a press check. When considering upgrades, take ergonomics and ease of control into account.

Mistake 3: Not Prioritizing Reliability

Different upgrades can change how handguns function. By taking the necessary extra steps, you can ensure your gun performs reliably.

For example, a new slide might require a different guide rod and spring to cycle correctly. Or, you might need to tune a trigger, especially if it has a lighter trigger pull than the stock trigger. You might even want upgrades solely to make your handgun more reliable, like grip plugs for Glocks that help keep debris out of the trigger mechanism.
