You will need to be fast, accurate, and ready to address any malfunctions that might happen during the middle of a run. Practice Clearing General Malfunctions
Whether you are running drills or at a competition, ideally, your firearm will never malfunction. Start the drill in the ready position with your chosen firearm, whether you prefer 9mm handguns, rifles, or shotguns.
For a pistol, take an empty brass case or snap cap, and get it caught in the slide. This simulates a classic stovepipe malfunction. Start by ejecting the mag and pulling the slide back. Tilt the ejection port down to clear the brass. Then, reload and fire. You will need to slide the bolt back on a rifle to clear the round and cycle a new one fully. Another failure-to-fire exercise to practice is the Tap-Rack, done with a pistol or rifle. Load a mag with a mix of dummy and real rounds, such as 7.62 ammo. You can start with the gun in your holster or in any position. Shoot at the target until you get a dummy round. When you don’t get a bang with the click, tap the mag, making sure it’s seated correctly. Next, rack the slide, cycling a new round. Finish by firing the round. You can also practice this drill totally dry, with only dummy rounds.
The Ragged Hole for Fundamentals and Accuracy
Ready to test your pistol or rifle fundamentals? Try the Ragged Hole. Start 3 yards away from your target and choose a spot. Fire between three and five rounds, aiming at the same spot on the target. The goal is to hit the same hole each time, leaving a single, ragged hole. If you can’t manage that yet, try to at least hit close enough that the holes are touching. This is an excellent test of your shooting fundamentals, and whether you’re a shooting pro or are new to firearms, everyone should do this drill at least once every range session.
Shoot Two, Load Two to Increase Your Reloading Speed
Shoot Two, Load Two is a shotgun drill designed to increase your reload speed. You can do the drill with both pump-action and semi-automatic shotguns. You want to be 10 yards from your target, whether it’s a metal target or a clay pigeon propped up on a berm. Load two rounds and have two rounds at the ready outside the shotgun, usually on a shell holder. Shoot the two rounds at the target. Reload the other two shells using your non-dominant hand, all while keeping the shotgun pointed at the target. The smoother you can get this drill, the more accurate you’ll be.
