4 Underrated Cable Machine Exercises

The next time you visit one of the best gyms Sacramento has to offer, consider adding some cable exercises to your routine Also called a pulley machine, it’s a staple of gyms and health clubs. While dumbbells, barbells, and other free weights get a lot of attention, cable machines offer consistent tension, allowing you to turn up the burn and really focus on isolated hypertrophy movements. While there are limitless cable exercises, these are four staples to try.

Cable Crossover

The cable crossover is an effective exercise to target your upper body muscles, specifically your chest and front deltoids.

Start in the center of the machine with the pulleys at the highest position and grab the handles. Your arms should be outstretched but slightly bent. Step forward, with one foot in front of the other to provide stability while tightening your core. Keep your head neutral and elbows slightly bent as you pull the hands together in front of your body, crossing them slightly. Hold this position briefly and then return to the starting position.

Face Pulls

The rear deltoids are important muscles but are often neglected with typical free weight movements. Luckily, face pulls on the cable machine at one of the best gyms in Turlock can help you effectively target these muscles, improving your upper body's muscular balance and posture.

Start with the pulley set around eye level with a rope attached. Take a step back with a slight lean to brace against the weight. Slowly pull the rope towards your face, being sure to pull the rope apart as it gets closer while driving your elbows back. Make sure to use a weight you can smoothly control and focus on engaging only your rear delts and upper back throughout the movement.

Cable Crunches

Looking to build and strengthen your core? Cable crunches provide better resistance than regular crunches and can be progressively overloaded as you build strength over time.

Attach a rope to the pulley in the top position and kneel in front of the machine. Hold the rope handle with both hands. Move one step away from the machine, hips high and engaged so you focus solely on your core and not your upper back. Hold the ropes in front of your face and crunch your torso down towards your knees.

Cable Pull-Through

Hinging movements are essential for functional strength and overall hip mobility. These movements are also great for building your glutes. While the kettlebell swing is the most popular hinge exercise, it isn’t always the easiest on the joints and doesn’t allow for smooth control. The cable pull-through fixes this issue, targeting the glutes without as much load on the spine.

Start with the pulley set to the lowest position and attach a rope handle. Face away from the cable stack while standing over the cable. Bend down, grab the handles, and then push your hips forward to return to standing with the cable between your legs. Hinge your hips backward with your core tight, and then return to the starting position.
