Low-impact workouts are a great way to get into (and stay) in shape. They’re less strenuous on your joints, but you still work up a sweat. Low-impact exercises can help build strength, enhance stamina, tone muscle, and more. Going into the spring and summer, you may be looking for straightforward, low-impact workouts you can incorporate into your routine.

The great thing about low-impact exercises is many of them are accessible. One example is rowing. Rowing is an excellent low-impact workout you can do any day of the week! Using oars for rowing makes it a great full-body workout. Here are a few more straightforward, low-impact exercises you can incorporate into your week.

Paddleboarding

For most of us, paddleboarding is a warm weather activity, which is perfect with summer fast approaching. But more importantly, paddleboarding is also a low-impact exercise. You might not necessarily think of it as a workout, given how fun it is, but you’ll feel it after an hour or so, especially in your arms and core. So, if you’re looking for a fun, engaging, and low-impact way to strengthen your core, here it is!

Rowing

While we’re still on the water, let’s talk about another fun, engaging, and low-impact exercise: rowing! And guess what? You can even convert your paddle board into a sculling rowing boat with a SUP rower attachment. One of the differences between rowing and paddleboarding is that rowing can be a full-body workout. As you use each crew oar to cut through the water, you’ll engage a number of muscle groups to make it all happen. It’s invigorating and rewarding!

Cycling

Cycling, or biking, gets you moving without asking too much of your joints (including your knees). Even when you’re powering up an incline, cycling offers a low-impact workout. One of the great things about cycling is that you can be outdoors on a bicycle or stay inside on a stationary bike. In other words, it’s the kind of low-impact activity you can easily adapt to your needs.

Hiking

Hiking brings exercise and adventure together into one amazing activity. Because hiking is just walking with more trail hazards (and possible inclines), it’s also a low-impact activity. It can require a little more planning than cycling. You may have to pack a backpack to carry water and trail snacks, and you may have to drive to a trailhead, but in the end, you get in a heart-pumping, low-impact workout!

Yoga

Let’s wind things down with yoga. Yoga is made up of all kinds of poses, often incorporating breathing and meditation into the mix. Despite the “chill” nature of yoga, various practices can help boost strength, stamina, and flexibility, while also being low impact. Yoga can be a great way to warm up before engaging in any of the activities mentioned already, and it can also be a great way to cool down. Of course, you can also practice yoga on its own or even on a paddle board (SUP yoga, anyone?) any day of the week.
