Delhi, the center of the Indian Subcontinent, is a land of both pristine and lengthy history. This city is littered with fascinating mosques, fortresses, and monuments left by the rulers of Mughal, who once occupied the city. The contrast between the vast Old Delhi and the well-planned New Delhi is immeasurable, and it's interesting to explore both. If you need relaxation, visit one of Delhi's thriving and beautiful gardens.

Here is a list of top attractions and places to visit in Delhi. The great thing is that many of these are free! To get to these majestic places one can either get in contact with a tour agency in Delhi, like Jatak Travels or take one or more of these popular Delhi tours.

Red Fort

Delhi's most famous monument, the Red Fort, is not only reminiscent of India's Mughal era but also a symbol of India's struggle for freedom. It was built in 1638 by Shah Jahan, the fifth Mughal emperor who decided to move the capital from Agra. The capture by Sikhs and British troops also belongs to the turbulent history of the fort. An hour-long sound and light show about the history of the fortress is held every night to bring your imagination back to ancient times.

Jama Masjid

Jama Masjid is another great treasure in the old town and one of the largest mosques in India. Its courtyard can accommodate an incredible 25,000 worshipers. The construction of the mosque took 12 years and was completed in 1656. A sharp rise to the South Tower rewards you with a breath-taking view (although hidden by a metal grid) on the roof of Delhi. Please dress appropriately when visiting the mosque. Otherwise, you will be denied admission. This means covering the head, legs, and shoulders. Clothing is available there.

Chandni Chowk

Old Delhi's main street, Chandni Chowk, is a striking contrast to New Delhi's wide, clean streets. Cars, bicycle rickshaws, hand-painted carts, pedestrians, and animals are all competing in space. It's messy, fragile, crowded, but also completely addicting. As one of India's oldest and busiest markets, its narrow winding streets are full of cheap jewelry, fabrics, and electronics. If you want more adventure, Chandni Chowk is the perfect place to sample the street food in Delhi. The famous Karim's Hotel in Delhi is also located there.

Humayun's Tomb

If you think Humayun's Tomb is a bit like the Taj Mahal in Agra, it was the inspiration for the creation of the Taj Mahal. The tomb was built in 1570 and houses the body of the second emperor Humayun. This was the first type of Mughal architecture built in India, and Mughal rulers tracked it through extensive construction periods throughout the country. The tomb is part of a larger complex surrounded by beautiful gardens.

Qutab Minar

Qutab Minar is one of the tallest brick minars in the world and is a great example of early Indo-Islamic architecture. Built-in 1193, the reason remains a mystery. Some believe it was created to mark the victory and beginning of Islamic rule in India, while others say it was used to pray to believers. The tower has five different floors and is covered with intricate sculptures and poems of the Holy Quran. There are many other historic buildings on the site.
