1) Get adequate sleep
When you sleep, your body is repairing and rejuvenating. Your mind is also processing what it has learned and experienced throughout the day. Sleep deprivation can have an impact on your mood, decision-making skills, weight control and mental health. It can also lead to accidents at work or in your personal life.
For optimal health, adults need seven to nine hours of sleep each night. There are many ways to improve sleep quality, including making sure that your bedroom is dark and quiet; using room temperature adjustments; sticking with a routine before bedtime; avoiding screen time right before bedtime; not eating too late; limiting caffeine consumption; practicing mindfulness techniques.
2) Eat breakfast
It is important to eat breakfast in the morning to give your body the energy it needs to go through the day. Breakfast can also keep you from overeating throughout the day as it will help fill you up. There are many options of what to have, but one of my favorites is peanut butter toast. I put peanut butter on some bread and then toast it, which not only gives me the protein I need, but also fills me up quickly.
Drink water: A lot of people think they need caffeine or sugar to get them going in the morning and this is true for most people- however, coffee and sugary drinks are just short term solutions that can lead to health problems later on. Caffeine wears off after about six hours, so you are left with an empty feeling afterwards and no energy when you really need it! Instead of using caffeinated beverages to wake yourself up, drink more water.
Start by drinking two glasses before lunchtime, then four glasses before dinner time, and eight glasses total each day. Once you have mastered this amount, slowly increase the amount by two each week until you reach eight glasses per day (this should take approximately three weeks).
Water contains antioxidants that protect cells from damage caused by free radicals. These free radicals come from pollution and cigarette smoke, but also occur naturally inside our bodies. When these free radicals damage cells over time, we can develop heart disease or cancer (just to name a few). By drinking plenty of water daily you are preventing cellular damage because it helps remove toxins in our body.
3) Exercise often
Exercise is one of the most important parts of living a healthy lifestyle. Studies show that just 20 minutes of exercise three times per week can reduce your risk for heart disease, diabetes and some cancers. Exercise can also help you sleep better, control your weight and improve your mood. Find activities that are fun and make you feel good about yourself. You will be more likely to stick with it if you like what you're doing.
Try starting out small by committing to 10 minutes at a time, gradually increasing as you get more comfortable. Set realistic goals so that you stay motivated! If you want to eat healthier, start by swapping out high-calorie snacks for healthier alternatives and try limiting processed foods. Track what you eat on your phone or in a journal so that you know how many calories are coming in versus how many calories are going out. It's easier than ever before to find nutrition information on packaged food items--even grocery stores have an aisle dedicated exclusively to health foods these days.
4) Snack smartly
Snacking is a great way to stay full and keep your energy up throughout the day. The key is to choose snacks that are healthy. Here are some suggestions:
- Fruit, yogurt, cheese sticks
- Nuts, granola bars, chocolate chips
- Baby carrots and hummus
- Celery with peanut butter or cream cheese
- Dried fruit or figs (watch out for sugar content)
- Protein shake made from unsweetened vanilla almond milk, protein powder, banana and cinnamon (to make it taste like a milkshake!)
- Fresh sliced apples dipped in honey
- Frozen grapes dipped in dark chocolate
- Raw almonds
5) Stay away from sodas and processed foods
Sodas and processed foods are usually high in sugar, which can lead to weight gain and other health problems. Instead of drinking sodas or eating processed food, try drinking water and eating whole foods like fresh fruits and vegetables.
If you feel thirsty, drink plenty of water instead of soda. And if you really want a soda, drink diet versions. Don't let your children eat too much sugar: Children should never be allowed to have more than 4 teaspoons (20g) of sugar per day, including natural sugars found in fruit juice. Cut back on alcohol consumption: Alcohol is not good for the liver. Don't smoke: Smoking leads to many serious health conditions including lung cancer and COPD.
