Tickets are booked; You're finally going to Colombia! Who knows what's waiting, but make sure you've got all those little preparations done before you leave. Avoid that sinking feeling at the start of your vacation and use this helpful checklist with tips to make sure you've got everything covered.
Vaccination
Colombia vaccination requirements can vary from person to person depending on age, allergies, and other medical conditions, so check with your doctor or travel clinic for the most up-to-date advice. You'll also need a course of medication for malaria prophylaxis if you're going into the Colombian jungle.
Visa
Colombia visa requirements can and do change at short notice, so check your national government's website after booking and a few weeks before you travel to make sure nothing has changed.
Travel Insurance
This should be covered with your Colombia tour operator, but if you are traveling independently your best option is to visit an insurance comparison website to find the best deals that cover your destination and holiday needs. Check the small print thoroughly to make sure you'll be covered for all aspects of your vacation for the duration.
Local Currency in Cash
It's a good idea to carry as many US dollars in cash as your insurance limit will allow – it's easier to change into Colombian pesos than traveler's checks and you'll get better exchange rates. Smaller denominations are easier to convert. Don't fall for the money changers, and write down or memorize a few simple conversions to make sure your transactions are in the right ballpark and you're not getting scammed.
National Security
Contrary to popular myth, Colombia is a very safe country. However, as issues can happen anywhere in the world, stay informed in the lead-up to your departure date by checking the websites of the US State Department or the UK Foreign Office.
Language Preparation
A few favorite phrases in Colombia will help you have a unique travel experience, so buy a phrasebook and memorize a few phrases, take few-week Spanish language courses, or search the Internet for some suggestions.
Confirming your Flights
You're almost ready to leave for home, but don't get to the airport without checking for a flight to Colombia booked months in advance! Changes happen all the time, and you can't expect your airline to notify you. Make sure you call them 48 hours prior to departure to avoid a frustrating journey at the airport. If you are traveling on multiple connecting flights, make sure you get a confirmation for all flights to avoid getting stranded mid-way.
Full? excellent! Pick up those suitcases and walk out the door, confident that you're ready; Next stop Colombia!
