Pressure sensitive adhesives (PSA, self-adhesive, self-stick adhesive) are a type of non-reactive glue that establishes a bind with a surface when pressure is applied. The adhesive can be activated without the use of a solvent, water, or heat. It's found in pressure-sensitive tapes, labels, adhesive dots, note pads, car trim, and a slew of other items.

The degree of binding is controlled by the amount of pressure used to apply the adhesive to the surface, as the name "pressure-sensitive" implies. Smoothness, surface energy, contamination clearance, and other surface characteristics all play a role in successful bonding.

Pressure sensitive adhesives are typically designed to make a bond and maintain that binding at room temperature. At low temperatures, PSAs lose their tack, and at high temperatures, they lose their shear holding capacity; specific adhesives are designed to perform at both high and low temperatures.

There are two types of adhesives: structural and Pressure sensitive adhesives. Structural adhesives harden by processes such as solvent evaporation(for example, white glue), UV radiation reaction (as in dental adhesives), a chemical reaction (such as two-part epoxy), or cooling to establish a permanent connection (as in hot melt). Pressure-sensitive adhesives (PSAs), on the other hand, make a connection merely by applying light pressure to the adhesive and the adherend.

Pressure sensitive adhesives are engineered to strike a balance between flow and flow resistance. Because the adhesive is pliable enough to flow, or wet, the adherend, a bond is formed. Because the adhesive is strong enough to resist flow when tension is applied to the connection, it possesses strength. There are chemical interactions such as van der Waals forces involved in the connection once the adhesive and the adherend are in close proximity, which contributes significantly to the ultimate bond strength. PSAs have viscoelastic (viscous and elastic)characteristics, which are both important for effective bonding.
