A Simple Check Before Passing

A Simple Check Before Passing

Overtaking a cyclist can look simple, but there are several things to consider before moving around them.

Start by checking the road ahead. You need enough room to maintain the required passing distance and complete the manoeuvre safely. Mirrors and blind spots should also be checked before changing position.

In NSW, the minimum space depends on the road's speed limit. A 1-metre gap is required where the limit is 60 km/h or less. If the speed limit is above 60 km/h, drivers must leave at least 1.5 metres.

Another point that can be easy to miss is that cyclists may not remain right beside the kerb. They could move around a parked car, rough surface or another obstruction.

If the road does not give you enough room, simply slow down and wait. Being patient can give you a much better opportunity to pass without rushing.
