The Ampere Primus is an electric scooter sold under the Ampere name- a subsidiary of an indigenous engineering company, Greaves Cotton Limited. As for the offerings, Ampere has only three electric scooters in its portfolio and those include the Reo, Magnus EX  and the Primus. The Ampere Reo is an entry-level offering, while the Primus is a flagship. Yes, as of now, only three Ampere bikes are available in the market.

However, the Ampere Primus currently takes on the likes of the Ola S1, Benling India Aura, TVS iQube, PURE EV Epluto 7G, and the Hero Electric Optima, to name a few. Most of these rivals fall under the Rs 1 lakh price range. There is no doubt that EVs are expensive to purchase but they are cheaper in the long run, especially in terms of running costs and maintenance.

Just so you know, the deliveries of the Ampere Primus will commence in the first half of 2023. However, as per some sources, some customers have paid only Rs 500 as the booking amount for this indigenous electric scooter. Please note that the booking amount might vary with year change or some other factors. You can, however, contact your nearest dealership for more information.

So, if you are planning to buy this locally-produced electric scooter, below are a few highlights that you should keep in mind. In addition, you can check out the location-based Ampere’s price on the autoX website.

The Power Supply

The indigenous bike manufacturer structured the Ampere Primus on an underbone frame, which accommodates a lithium-ion battery pack of 3 kWh. This battery is coupled with a 3.4 kW motor. The type of motor this electric scooter packs is a PMS Motor (Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor), and this battery has a gradability of 7 degrees. The higher the gradability, the better it is for the battery, as it will be able to withstand harsh weather and climate. With this battery pack, the Ampere Primus has a rated power of 3400 W, which means that it can churn out that much power continuously without letting the engine overheat. Moreover, the peak power this electric scooter has is 4000 W. Last but not least, the Ampere Primus has a mid-mount motor.

As per the Ampere bikes, this electric two-wheeler can attain a top speed of 77 km/h. In addition, the Primus can do 0-40 km/h in just 4.2 seconds. Moreover, the indigenous bike manufacturer claims that the Ampere Primus can return a range of 107 km. Please note that this is a claimed range. The real-world range can vary with local traffic conditions and individuals’ riding styles. Speaking of battery, this scooter’s battery is portable as well. It can take up to five hours for the normal portable charger to fully replenish the lithium-ion battery. At the same time, a portable fast charger is available as well, but as an option.

Moreover, the Ampere Primus has three riding modes: Eco, City and Power. It is worth noting that the power delivery might vary with the riding mode. Eco and City modes usually have a lower engine output than the top-most ride mode.

Besides the engine performance, let’s now jump to the suspension setup offered on this homegrown electric scooter. It has a hydraulic telescopic fork suspension at the front and a dual shock absorber at the rear. This suspension setup works in tandem with dual drum brakes, which is a standard arrangement. Considering the heavy localisation that went into the production of the Ampere Primus, the suspension setup shouldn’t let you lament the ride quality, as it is safe to say that this scooter is built keeping Indian roads in mind. Having said that, this scooter can absorb the bumps from potholes with ease. It shouldn’t make the rider or the pillion jostle much over bad patches.

Further, this scooter runs on 12-inch alloy wheels- both at the front and back. Keeping safety in mind, the Ampere Primus has a combined braking system. For your reference, the combined braking system is also known as dual-channel ABS. But, a two-wheeler with a dual braking system and dual disc brakes will reduce the chances of mishaps as they provide impressive braking power around the corners and on emergency brakings. Moreover, this combination won’t make the bike skid or make a stoppie. Considering the price of the Ampere Primus, the domestic bike manufacturer should have offered a disc-drum setup at least. In terms of superior specifications, the Ola S1 has proven itself to be a better pick. No wonder, why it is leading in terms of sales. You can check out the Ola S1 price on the autoX website.

Features

As far as the features go, the Ampere Primus packs a good number of features. This electric scooter boasts a fully digital instrument cluster, which shows relevant digital readings, such as RPMs, speed, and the distance made, alongside a low battery indicator. You will also notice a USB charging port. At the same time, the digital console has in-built Bluetooth connectivity, which usually hints at mobile app connectivity. That said, you will have to download Ampere’s in-house designed app, which can let the rider access the vehicle’s data, such as RPM dashboard, battery level, battery health, distance made, range left, and upcoming service(s). Asides from that, the Primus also has a 22-litre under-seat storage, three driving modes, reverse assistance, a side stand sensor, and roadside assistance.

As for exterior lighting, the Ampere Primus has an LED headlight, paired with regular bulbs for brake light, taillight and turn signals.

So, these are a few offerings of the Ampere Primus. You can, however, check out the curated list of features and specifications of this indigenous electric scooter on the autoX website.
