Over the years, sweet dishes have developed many variations that have led to the development of different baked sweets. Today, you have pineapple cakes, red velvet cakes, fruit cakes, and more such varieties. Puffs, on the other hand, are delicious snacks with numerous variations which are also a beloved dish of many.

What are Puffs?

Puffs are a light and flaky pastry made from laminated dough and made of flour, water, salt, and butter. Unlike other brilliant creations, the origins of puff pastries can be traced back to ancient Egypt, Greece, and Rome. These civilisations made use of filo-type pastry that became the ancestor of all modern pastries and was used to create sweet tarts, honey cakes, fruit pastries, and dumplings stuffed with nuts and dates.

The evidence of such creations can be found in ancient tomb paintings or mentioned in writing such as Aristophanes’ comic plays. Despite its origins, puff pastry itself was invented in the 17th century when pastry-making was fashionable in Britain. The dish is believed to have been created in 1645 by a French painter and apprentice cook named Claude Gelee.

What are pineapple cakes?

Pineapple cakes are fruit cakes that use ingredients such as egg, butter, flour, sugar, and pineapple jam or slices. This is a traditional Taiwanese dish that was invented between the 1970s to early 2000s. The credit goes to hundreds of years of history and pastry chefs that experimented with this product. Such a cake has a creamy crust with sweet and sour fruity jam on the inside. This has made the dessert famous not only in Taiwan but also globally.

How are puffs better than pineapple cakes?

Puffs have diverse variations that range from sweet chocolaty to creamy puffs used for snacks and desserts like veg potato puffs consumed as snacks with afternoon or evening tea and coffee. Pineapple cakes do not have much variation and are instead consumed only after a specific meal.Puffs pastries can be designed in various styles like Pillsbury toaster strudel, Danish dessert, pie, and braided form. This makes puffs look more like an appetising dish than pineapple cakes which are usually limited to layered cake form.Pineapple cakes have a sour taste to them which ruins the overall cake mood and the texture with pieces of fruit or sour flavour jam added to it. Puffs, however, have more variations to complement the unified flavour of bread and the primary ingredient in the dish.
