This course is the third in a 16-course sequence of the Certificate Program in Bhagavad Geeta through Samskritam. Students will be introduced to Bhagavad Geeta (Chapter 2) and learn elementary structures of the Sanskrit language through the verses of the Bhagavad Geeta. They will gain familiarity with the script, expand their vocabulary, and use special handouts to understand the meaning and structure of each verse. Students will learn to think about the Bhagavad Geeta from within the Sanskrit language and its worldview.
Course Content:
Faculty-led study of Bhagavad Geeta Chapter 2, verse by verse, while simultaneously exploring the meanings of the verses and nuances of the Sanskrit language. Introduction to elements of the Sanskrit language, including nouns, consonants, and case endings, adjectives, adverbs, pronouns, different verb types and usages, and direct, indirect, and conditional speech. Illustration of sentence formation and structure using examples from the Bhagavad Geeta.Learning Objectives: Upon completing this course, students will be able to:
Imbibe building blocks of the Sanskrit language through everyday conversation. Understand the use of the 3rd, 4th, 5th, 7th, and vocative case-endings. Practice verbal roots (dhatu) and their different forms, tenses, and usage. Analyze words and expressions from the Bhagavad Geeta in the context of the Sanskrit language.
