Here's what people are saying about the show:
Imagine the best western movie, but 398,5 hours longer, and you have this programme! From beginning to end, Hell on Wheels was wonderful! It contains everything a good series should have, and then some! To put it another way, the superb camera work, the atmosphere, the performers, and the sensation you experience after watching each episode make you want more: I WANT MORE! Even if you don't like westerns, you'll enjoy this show (as I once did), Hell on Wheels will keep you captivated! AMC has done it once more! Original series that I, along with many others, gave a 10 out of ten rating!
I strongly suggest that you watch this show.Hell on Wheels is a gritty and exciting western set just after the Civil War is over! I hadn't seen it when it first aired, but after hearing so many excellent things about it, I decided to give it a shot, and I'm glad I did. In a matter of weeks, I binge-watched the entire series, and it was well worth my time. It's one of the most unappreciated television programmes ever!
A true western series devoid of needless romantic subplots. Despite the abundance of western television shows and films, rarely has the construction of the transcontinental railroad been subjected to such scrutiny. It's a lot like "Deadwood," but not quite as good. Despite its lack of notable strengths, the western drama succeeds in making the first season a gripping and interesting experience. This reminded me of George G. Gilman's Edge series of Brutal Western novels, which I used to enjoy. It reminds me of my days as a Civil War reenactor as well. They've slammed the door in the face of era history. They've also highlighted the period's depravity as well as its splendour. The scenes in Kansas are as good as anything you'll see on TV. The west was designed for tough individuals or those who had already died. And the writers and directors haven't shied away from showing events as they were. The Harlots don't look like they're from Vegas, and the Protagonist makes mistakes. This sitcom has shown a lot of promise in its first two episodes, as well as some terrific human drama. I'm hoping the authors don't let that bother them, and instead keep it rough and violent without going too far.A critical reaction
The first season has a 63 percent Metacritic rating based on 28 reviews, suggesting a "generally positive" response. The second season has a 60 percent rating on Metacritic, indicating "mixed or average" reviews. "Hands down, the most intriguing show on the fall schedule," Hank Stuever of the Washington Post said of the episode. Despite its epic scope, Hell on Wheels is a western at heart, even if it has a frigid heart. Guns, knives, arrows, and scalpings abound, as do the explosive socio-psychological wounds left in the wake of the Civil War.
The show "takes its cues more from the movies than from reality," according to Robert Lloyd of the Los Angeles Times. In the episodes I watched, I never felt like I was watching a train being built, and it took a little squinting to avoid seeing the characters as actors in a field delivering lines. Despite [the producers'] improbable occurrences in order to get their characters in position, and despite a number of those characters' resolute refusal to become compelling at all, the show builds pace as it goes on.
