Suppose you are an Australian citizen or permanent resident with children living permanently overseas. In that case, there may be an opportunity to reunite with them in Australia via the Contributory Parent (Permanent) visa 143 programs.

This program allows the parent of an Australian child who has been residing outside of Australia for the last ten years to apply for permanent residency in Australia based on the parentage or guardianship of that child.

If you’re eligible and wish to apply, here’s what you need to know about documentation requirements and how long the process will take.

Why should I apply?

Getting a Permanent Residency visa means living and working in Australia indefinitely, with no further conditions or restrictions. As part of that process, you must prove that you have an existing relationship with your child (or children).

You might be able to do so in several ways, depending on your circumstances. This is why applying for documentation that demonstrates that relationship as early as possible is essential.

How do I qualify for contributory parent visas?

Requirements vary based on whether you sponsor your child, your partner, or neither. If you’re sponsoring your child, you must be at least 18 years old and an Australian citizen or permanent resident.

If you’re sponsoring a parent (or partner), you must be an Australian citizen or have been an Australian permanent resident for at least 4 of the past five years.

What are the Documents required to apply for Contributory Parent (Permanent) visa 143?

You need to provide certain documents to be eligible for Australian permanent residency under the parent category. The documents required are as follows. The following documents are mandatory and have to be provided by all applicants to Australian migration agents.

The Australian citizen or permanent resident child must sign a statutory declaration confirming that he/she is younger than 18.Has never been married or engaged in an interdependency relationshipThey have not turned 18 and are living in Australia with their parent. If your child were born outside of Australia, you’d also need to provide copies of their birth certificate, passport, and citizenship certificate. If your child were born in Australia, you’d only need to provide copies of their birth certificate and passport. If you do not hold Australian citizenship, you’ll also need to prove that you were either born in Australia or legally migrated here before your children were born.

What is Contributory Parent (Temporary) visa 173?

This visa lets parents with dependent children and settled children and grandchildren live in Australia. You’ll need to meet English language, health, and character requirements, and there is no age limit for either parent or child.

The main requirement is that at least one of you must be an Australian citizen or permanent resident (or hold a valid permanent humanitarian visa). If granted, you’ll receive an initial two-year temporary visa, followed by a further three years if required by Immigration.

You can apply for a second three-year extension after your first has been approved. After five years, you can apply for permanent residence under Subclass 173P. Your family members can also apply for Contributory Parent (Temporary) visa 173 to come and join you in Australia during your stay.
