In chemistry, bio-butanol is an alcohol that is used as a solvent or as a fuel. The solvent is manufactured by fermenting sugar, starch,and cellulosic feedstocks such as wheat, sugar beet, corn, straw, and wood. This alternative to crude oil is called bio-butanol. Fuels withhigher octane numbers, larger flammability limits, high flash points,and high heat of vaporization make good choices.
Due to its longer chain,biobutanol has a higher heating value than bioethanol (similar togaso line). For converting cellulose into higher alcohols such as1-propanol and 1-butanol, researchers have used combinations of different starting materials, organisms, and target fuels. The fermentation process of acetone-butanol-ethanol (ABE) can be used to produce butanol, a bio conversion process discovered and examined continuously for over 150 years.
Biobutanol has a greater energy density and is less hygroscopic than bioethanol,allowing for larger gasoline mixing ratios. New advancements have been focused on reducing the effect in two areas: strain improvements and downstream processes.
