You’ve probably heard about various ways to improve communication — coaches, therapists, tools, and different methods all designed to help us communicate better. Regardless of the steps you take, looking at your whole system rather than just isolated behaviors is a holistic perspective worth considering. Let’s take a deeper look beneath the skin.

Just as Fascia connects researchers and medical practitioners worldwide, it also forms a continuous tensional network throughout the human body, linking every organ, muscle, nerve, and fiber. Whether you’re aware of it or not, Fascia plays a key role in communication — not just physically but also in emotional and sensory perception.

Health practitioners, therapists, structural integrators, and movement experts continuously translate scientific findings on Fascia into practical applications. Over the past decade, I’ve dedicated myself to studying Fascia, using it as a tool for understanding physical and emotional healing, and ultimately, as a way to enhance communication.

Different Definitions of Fascia

Findley and Schleip (2007) broadly define Fascia as all soft fibrous connective tissues that penetrate the human body. Pischinger (2007) describes Fascia as the largest bodily system since it interacts with all other systems.

Paoletti and Pischinger even propose that Fascia plays a role in every type of human pathology, while Langevin and Yandow (2002) suggest that Fascia is a metasystem influencing all other physiological systems. These insights highlight how Fascia allows our body to function as a unified whole.

As a structural balance & flexibility coach, I emphasize the importance of Fascia quality in movement and overall well-being. This continuous network shapes and holds us together, connecting everything — from muscles to bones, internal organs, nerves, and blood vessels. It extends from just beneath the skin to the body’s deep core and even up to the brain.

One of the most respected scientists in this field, Jaap van der Wal, has explored how Fascia complexity begins during human embryological development — an area of study that is truly fascinating.

The Importance of Fascia Hydration

A crucial aspect of maintaining healthy Fascia is proper Fascia hydration. Interestingly, hydrating isn’t just about how much water you drink — it’s also about whether the water reaches the tissues that need it.

Fascia hydration depends on movement and loading patterns. When you move, you squeeze water out of the Fascia, and when you rest, the water is reabsorbed. Without this process, Fascia becomes sticky and immobile, leading to dysfunction.

What happens when Fascia starts to dehydrate? It loses Collagen, an essential protein found in connective tissues that supports every layer of the body. This highlights the vital relationship between Fascia hydration and overall health.

Components of Fascia

Essentially, Fascia consists of three key elements:

  1. Fibers — Primarily Collagen, the most abundant protein, and elastin.
  2. Ground Substance — A gel-like material containing water-absorbing molecules that determine the viscosity of Fascia.
  3. Water — Most of the water in Fascia is bound, much like fluid absorbed by a sponge.

When you think about Fascia hydration, consider both water intake and movement. Without movement, Fascia struggles to maintain its necessary level of hydration, leading to stiffness and reduced function.

Final Thoughts

Understanding Fascia and its intricate role in our body can transform the way we approach movement, health, and even emotional well-being. If you’re interested in learning more about the nutritional and therapeutic needs of Fascia, I invite you to explore our latest online lectures.

By nurturing our Fascia through movement, proper hydration, and nutrition, we can improve not only our physical health but also our ability to communicate and connect with others on a deeper level.
