A new project is underway at Fort Stewart Housing. It comes after years of what many military families call a “housing crisis” within on-base units. WTOC worked with the Military Family Advisory network to learn more about the issues and what’s being done to make it better.

The Army’s privatized housing at the base is managed by Balfour Beatty Communities. It includes single-family homes, duplexes and townhomes along with apartments for active duty families. It’s available for E1-E6 and O1-O5 Soldiers and their spouses in select neighborhoods on post. It’s also available to qualified military retirees and DOD civilians in the private sector in off-post communities near Fort Stewart.

Military families can choose to buy a home on-post or off-post, depending on rank and availability. There are a few different home options, including single-family houses and townhomes with 2- to 4-bedroom floor plans, plus duplexes and apartments. Homes are located in the Richmond Hill, Ellabell, Hinesville and Pooler areas, with the median home cost at $125,300 in Savannah County.

On-post housing is a great way to get connected to the community and stay close to base amenities. It’s also a great way to save money on utilities and maintenance costs versus living off-post. It’s important to keep in mind that buying a home outside of the installation will increase your cost of living. The cost of a two-bedroom apartment on Fort Stewart is $1,200 per month.

Those interested in purchasing a home on or off-post should check with their chain of command to see what their options are for doing so. In general, E4s are not permitted to live off-post without permission from their chain of command. Those with higher ranks may be allowed to do so with prior approval from their commanding officer or department head.

The community at Fort Stewart is small and friendly, with plenty to do, including swimming, fishing, hiking and biking. It’s also a short drive to Savannah, which has lots of dining and shopping.
