Garage Door Opener Light Not Working — Here's How to Fix It

Opener runs fine. Door opens and closes. But the light isn't coming on. Or it flickers. Or it stays on permanently and won't shut off.

Almost always a quick fix. Here's the order to work through it.

Bulb is burned out — start here

Unplug the opener, remove the light cover, unscrew the bulb. Look at the filament if it's incandescent — burned out filament, replace it. Use the bulb type and wattage specified in your opener manual. Most residential openers use standard A19 bulbs at 60 watts maximum.

Don't exceed the rated wattage. A higher wattage bulb generates more heat inside the housing than it's designed for and can damage the socket or the light board over time.

LED bulb causing problems

LED bulbs in garage door openers cause two specific problems that people don't connect to the bulb.

First — the light may flicker or not come on reliably because some LEDs don't play well with the dimming circuits some openers use for the light. The LED sees the circuit as a dimmer and behaves erratically.

Second — certain LED bulbs emit radio frequency interference that shortens remote range dramatically. If you replaced the bulb with an LED and the remote range dropped at the same time — that's the LED causing it.

Fix: use an LED specifically labeled as garage door opener compatible. These are shielded to prevent RF interference. Or just use incandescent. For more on the remote range issue, the full troubleshooting process is at GarageDoorRepairz.

Light stays on and won't turn off

Openers have a light timer — the light stays on for a set period after operation then turns off. If the light stays on permanently:

The light timer setting may have been changed. Look for a light timer adjustment on the motor unit or in the app settings if it's a smart opener.

The light board or relay is stuck. On older openers, the relay that controls the light can fail in the "on" position. Unplug and replug — sometimes clears it. If it keeps happening, the light board needs replacing.

Socket or wiring issue

If a new bulb doesn't fix it — look at the socket. Corrosion on the contacts, a bent center tab that isn't making contact with the bulb base. The center tab can be carefully bent slightly outward to improve contact.

If the socket looks fine and bulbs still don't work — the light circuit on the logic board has failed. At that point it's board replacement or living without the light.
