Guide to measuring marijuana: quantities and weights

Understanding the weight of cannabis can be a bit complicated, especially if you are new to the world of marijuana. Even if gram measurements are familiar to you, it can be very confusing when bud vendors start talking about eighths or quarters (or, even worse, if they use old-school American jargon like nickels, dimes, folds and zippers). However, with the explanations that we bring you today, you will be able to easily understand even the most complicated marijuana jargon.

QUANTITIES OF CANNABIS

Cannabis is measured based on its dry weight, and is often sold by the gram, ounce, or pound, which can be difficult to understand. On some occasions you can also buy marijuana by the kilo, although it is not the most common.

We are going to see below some of the most common measures of marijuana, such as grams, eighths, quarters, half ounces, ounces, pounds and kilograms.

HOW MUCH IS A GRAM OF MARIJUANA?

To understand weight in grams, you'll need to remember when you first learned to measure in math class. If you live in the US and are not very familiar with the metric system, remember: 1 gram (g) of marijuana equals 1000 milligrams (mg) dry weight.

Measuring exactly 1 gram of dried flowers can be a bit tricky, as cannabis buds are often not uniform in size, shape, or weight. That is why it is interesting to have a good relationship with your cannabis grower or marijuana seller, to encourage them to tip the scales in your favor. Unfortunately, that doesn't always happen, so sometimes they will sell you a little less than what you actually paid.

Those who start using marijuana for the first time often wonder how many grams it takes to roll a joint. Although this varies depending on your rolling style, 1 gram of marijuana is usually enough to roll 2 normal size joints.

Although cannabis prices vary widely around the world, 1 gram of good quality bud can cost between $7-12 in the US and €8-15 in Europe. Remember that each country and even each region has different prices, and that they are only approximate figures.

HOW MUCH DOES AN OUNCE OF MARIJUANA COST?

One ounce (oz) of marijuana equals 28 grams, 28,000 mg, or 0.028 kilograms (kg).

Ounces are an imperial measurement for liquids and solids used in a small number of countries. According to Statista, only the US, Liberia, and Myanmar primarily use imperial measures officially. However, in the world of cannabis (which always swims against the tide), imperial measures are still among the most used to measure marijuana.

Ounces of cannabis can also be divided into halves, quarters, and eighths, which we'll cover in more detail shortly. Again, marijuana prices vary widely, but an ounce of good weed usually costs between $190-330 in the US or €200-400 in Europe.

HOW MUCH IS AN EIGHTH OF MARIJUANA?

When we talk about an eighth of marijuana, we mean ⅛ of an ounce, which is equivalent to 3.5 g or 3,500 mg.

Eighths are a very common measure of cannabis, and a great choice for those who are trying out a new strain or only smoke sporadically (for example, a couple of times a week). Most North American dispensaries also list their menu prices in eighths.

In the US, a ⅛ of marijuana usually costs between $20 and $40, depending on its quality and variety. In Europe, prices for an eighth of marijuana can range from €25-50, again depending on the quality, variety and where you buy it.

HOW MUCH DOES A QUARTER OF MARIJUANA COST?

A quarter (¼) of marijuana, as you probably guessed, refers to ¼ of an ounce, which is equal to 7g or 7000mg.

Quarters are a great way for regular smokers (who smoke several times a week) to buy strains they know they like. You'll also see some vendors, including dispensaries, offer lower prices per gram if you want to buy a ¼.

In the US, a quart of cannabis typically costs between $50 and $90, depending on its quality and variety. In Europe, you will normally pay around €55-105 for a room.

HOW MUCH DOES A MARIJUANA SOCK COST?

A half (½) of marijuana refers to half an ounce, or 14g (14000mg).

Half ounces are another very common measure of marijuana, especially among regular smokers who prefer to buy their cannabis in bulk to save multiple trips to the dispensary.

Ounce prices vary widely: in the US they are between $84-145, while in Europe they are between €95-180. However, it's in your best interest to haggle if you're buying halves or ounces, as most dispensaries and vendors typically drop their prices for orders of this size.

HOW MUCH DOES A POUND OR A KILO OF MARIJUANA COST?

A pound of marijuana equals 16 ounces (or ~454g), while a kilo of bud weighs 1000 grams.

Unless you are Snoop Dogg, a licensed retailer, or a major grower, it is highly unlikely that you will buy pounds or kilos of cannabis. Due to the fact that they are not typical quantities, we cannot offer reliable estimates on their prices either.
