How Do AC Units Operate?

By actively eliminating heat and humidity from the indoor air, an air conditioner actually creates cool air within your home or other enclosed place. It moves the unwelcome heat and humidity outside while returning the cooled air to the interior space. A standard air conditioner or cooling system comprises three primary mechanical parts: a compressor, a condenser coil, and an evaporator coil. It employs a specific chemical called refrigerant. Together, these parts enable fast conversion of the refrigerant from gas to liquid and back again. The refrigerant gas is compressed and heated by the compressor before being sent to the condenser coil, where it is transformed into a liquid. The refrigerant then returns to the building and enters the evaporator coil. The indoor coil cools here as the liquid refrigerant evaporatively condenses. The cold evaporator coil, where the heat from within the house is absorbed into the refrigerant, is blasted with interior air by a fan. The heated evaporated gas is then delivered back outside to the compressor while the cooled air is circulated around the house. The refrigerant then returns to a liquid condition, dissipating the heat into the ambient air. Up until the required temperature is reached in your home, this cycle is repeated.

Evaporator coil, blower fan, compressor, and condensing coil are all included in packaged systems as a single unit. Similar to split systems, packaged systems use return air ducts to draw warm air from the house into the evaporator coil area. The cooled air is returned to the residence through supply air ducts after passing through the evaporator coil. Additionally, just like with a split system, the condenser coil allows the surplus heat to be discharged outside.
Additionally, there are several alternatives for improved energy efficiency with packaged systems. Both single-stage and two-stage systems are available. Multi-speed blower fans are a feature of more efficient types. Packaged systems are particularly prevalent in the south and southwest of the United States.
