I don't know about you, but I think travelling always goes a lot more smoothly when you’ve prepped with a realistic budget. Having a proper budget, or at the very least, a plan, will put your finances in a better position and prolong your adventure overall.

There are all sorts of different ways to save money on your travels, and I'm going to take a closer look at them in this article. It might involve travelling with a budget airline or staying in a cheaper hostel, let alone finding a place further out of town. But either way, if you want to know how to save money while you're travelling, I've got you covered here in this article.

Affordable Transport

The transport you choose will obviously massively affect the cost of your trip. Budget airlines and overnight bus trips are some good, cheap options compared to the expensive flights you will probably find in most places.

Travelling light is also a decent way of bringing the total cost of your trip down, so give it a go! In recent times, airlines have really started to see what they can get away with when it comes to charging passengers eye-watering amounts just for checking in larger pieces of luggage. So, as a result, bringing smaller bags can save you a surprising amount of money.

Some people (typically the more entrepreneurial digital nomad types) make money by getting a job when they are travelling. Who knew? If you can be bothered, getting a job while on your travels can offer a chance to explore while at the same time making some decent money. Plus, in today's post-pandemic world, it has never been easier to work remotely.

Cheaper Accommodation

It is possible to save plenty of money on accommodation if travellers don't just go for the obvious, default hotel accommodation options. If you put your mind to it, you could easily find cheaper options like hostels and guest houses that offer much better value for money. And just because they’re cheap, it doesn’t mean they aren’t great places to stay. They are often well decorated, with intentionally designed decor and prints from Snapfish adorning the walls.

Staying somewhere that is a bit further out of the city centre will, most of the time, mean cheaper lodgings, while also giving travellers better insight into what living locally really feels like.

Most of the time, long-distance travellers prefer basic facilities to high-end, swanky hotels. Spending less money on accommodation means you can spend more of it on transport, food and activities.

Delicious Without Breaking the Bank

This might come as a bit of a surprise, but you do not need to fork out a lot of money to get the very best authentic cuisine. Oftentimes, you won’t have much difficulty getting your hands on affordable meals from street food markets or local cafés.

Additionally, cooking once in a while during your travels can be more cost effective, especially if you’re choosing to stay in an apartment (which can often be more affordable if there is a group of you).

This might make me sound a bit like Captain Obvious, but you should also try to avoid dishing out fortune on overpriced bottled water. Most train stations and airports have taps where the water is safe for drinking, so top up there for free instead.
