Art competitions are one of the most popular ways to create a name for yourself in the art world. These competitions can be based on different themes, styles, interpretations, or anything else depending on what the organizers are looking for. However, irrespective of the theme or style, one of the most common elements that the jury and organizers often look for is the color artistry of your work. The interplay of different elements and how the artists have used different pigments to create their work can play a huge role in the determination of final results.
If you are a new artist who’s still learning the interplay of color in art, here are some tips that can help you get better at it. Implementation of these tips will not only help you to significantly improve your results but also leave a great impression of your work on the jury.
- Use Colors To Play With Light and Shadow
Your use and mixing of colors can significantly affect the representation of light and darkness in your work. If you want to paint a space that looks lit or has sunlight gleaming, use more yellow when mixing your pigments. The warmth in the yellow color creates a natural lighting effect, making the scene look well-lit. On the contrary, if you want to create a darker effect, add a touch of blue to your color. Blue is a cool color and thus has the tendency to darken any shade you mix it with. It is also used as a color that represents melancholy, depression, and night skies.
Displaying our color artistry in this manner will help you create a sense of depth in your work while also making it look more realistic. It tells the judges that you are serious about your art and not pursuing it just as a hobby.
- Mix Your Greens for the Landscape
Nature has an abundance of green so there is no reason why your artwork should lack it. If you have ever observed a garden or even just a tree, you would have noticed the different shades of green in it. Hence, it is exactly for this reason I always advise artists to mix their own greens instead of buying them. It speaks a lot about your color artistry when you can use a single color to create different effects in the same work.
When you mix green yourself, you can create its different shades, thus making your work look more nuanced and realistic. Using one single shade of green throughout the artwork makes it look monochromatic, boring, and something that lacks depth. It also shows that you can play with the least number of colors to create the best results. So instead of using too many colors at once, try to limit your color to just two or three and create different hues of them for desired results.
- Don’t be Afraid To Break the Rules
I am not advising you to break the rules of the competition. My advice is for the artists who feel afraid of going against the norms. Just because red has been used as a symbol of love for so long, doesn’t mean it always has to be the same. It is your artwork and you are free to let your colors represent what you want them to represent. Just make sure that your color artistry conveys the meaning in a loud and clear manner and doesn’t confuse your audience. Be bold in mixing the colors and create your own signature style that is hard to forget.

- Learn to Balance Your Pigments
If you understand the color wheel, you will also know that there are complementary colors on it. These are the colors that are placed opposite each other on the color wheel. They are used together in an artwork to create contrast, depth, and compliment. However, using them in excess can make it very uncomfortable to look at, unless that is what you desire. Similarly, a lack of complement can make your work appear flat and show a lack of color artistry.
To be able to strike that balance, you need to learn how to balance your colors. The best practice is to start with your dominating shade and then use your compliments accordingly to create the contrast.
Your Color Artistry Can Make Or Break Your Art
Your use of color plays a huge role in deciding the final outcome of your work. A well-placed color arrangement can create a sense of completion and balance in your work whereas a lack of it can make it look scattered and poorly arranged. Hence, irrespective of the art competition you partake in, you must always make sure that your color artistry is unbeatable.
