Sometimes firewood is cut into pieces that are too large to use. Splitting the wood will make large-diameter logs usable. It allows them to season quickly. There are different ways and tools you can use to split your wood. Continue reading as we explain how to split wood with a maul.
Put your first log on your chopping block
You need to ensure it is stable and near the center of your block. Swinging a very heavy maul at a block that is not stable will be very dangerous. A glow could strike your leg and cripple you in seconds. It could also send flying wood off like a dangerous projectile. You need to set yourself up for success by ensuring the wood is placed securely.
Examine your wood before splitting it
After getting your firewood delivery, you need to examine your wood before splitting it. Check the log for hairline cracks. You need to aim perfectly to ensure the blade of your maul runs in the same direction as the cracks. Keep in mind that different types of wood spilt differently. You should plan accordingly. Oak will split easily through the center while maple will split easily towards the edges.
Aim
Select a location you wish to split your log and stand with the maul resting on the chosen location. Now set your feet square. You can tap an indentation into the log so that you will have a good visual cue to guide your maul.
Swing your maul
Hold your maul firmly and ensure your non-writing hand is at the end of the handle. Cradle your maul using your dominant hand, below the head of the maul. Now flex your knees and lift the maul head up above your head. Extend your arms straight and slide your stronger hand down to ensure both hands are close. Grip the end of the handle and bring your hands down as you flick your wrists. Let gravity do the work of splitting your firewood for you.
