Nursing home and other similar placements have been facing various challenges due to the COVID-29 pandemic. Not only are the older individuals residing in these nursing homes, but the staff members are also at higher risk of COVID-19.

Factors Contributing to COVID-19 Outspread in Nursing Homes:

There are a number of reasons and conditions that are contributing towards this COVID-19 outspread in nursing homes like:

UnderstaffingFrequent physical contactsShared rooms by the residentsPPR shortage like lack of necessary masks and glovesStaff transferring residents from settings to settingsWorkers working in multiple facilities simultaneouslyLagging vaccination rates in staff or residents

These are just some of the factors that contribute towards COVID outspread, making staff members even vulnerable. This is specifically dangerous for staff because they have several responsibilities on their shoulders.

For instance providing elderly care to older individuals 24/7 is their duty. Nursing homes are potential breeding grounds for viral and bacterial diseases.

COVID-19 Guidelines for the Facility Workers working in Nursing Homes:

Dealing with this COVID-19 situation is very hectic. This is specifically stressful for the workers that have to work in such a packed environment. The facility workers working in nursing homes have to deal with various issues on an everyday basis.

OSHA is very committed to protecting the health and safety of the workers that are still working at workplaces amid the COVID-19 pandemic. 

Occupational Safety and Health Associated has issued a series of guidelines and alerts designed for keeping the workplace safer. These guidelines are provided to the facility management and workers to help them in reducing exposure to the COVID-19. These guidelines help facilities and its staff to provide effective elderly care amid pandemic.

Guidelines:

The management should instruct the sick workers to stay at their homes till they are fully recovered.Screening of the facility workers, as well as nursing home residents, must be done regularly. This is necessary for detecting symptoms and signs consistent with COVID-19 early on.The facility workers and the residents should be quarantined immediately is exposed to the COVID-19 virus.Effectively following all of the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) guidance on the resident visitation policiesThe visitors must be asked to inform their visits to the facility management 14 days earlier. Also, they must inform the facility management about any signs or symptoms of COVID at least 14 days earlier.All the individuals within the facility must practice social distancing. They must keep a distance of at least 6 feet from others. All the workers must take turns to take breaks. Stagger break periods must be used effectively to avoid overcrowding in the break rooms.Alternate options must be used for large in-person gatherings.The HVAC system of the facilities also must be evaluated by qualified ventilation experts.The services must provide appropriate hand-washing and hand-sanitizing must be provided. The sanitizers should be alcohol-based, with at least 60-70% ethanol/isopropanol.The facilities must regularly clean and disinfect the areas or things that are frequently touched.The hospital-graded cleaning chemical must be used for cleaning.All the workers must have access to their own PPE equipment. They must wear this PPE when necessary, as guided by the policy.The management must continually monitor PPE stock, burn rate, and supply chains. This must be done to ensure there is always enough PPE on hand.The management must develop and train staff on the process for cleaning and decontaminating PPE.All the workers must receive appropriate training on COVID-19 policies and procedures. They must be trained using language they understand properly.Moreover, the management also must ensure the policies encourage workers to appropriately report safety and health concerns.
