Kanye West has had demonstrated several manifestations of a troubled mental state over the years. His former wife, Kim Kardashian has held his bipolar disorder accountable for his long history of concerning tweets, erratic behaviour during public appearances and overtly threatening Instagram posts.
Bipolar disorder has some serious lasting effects that enable a person to constantly dangle between two extreme emotional states.
Here is a look at the history of Kanye’s struggle with bipolar disorder and how it contributed to the gradual dismantlement of his relationship with Kim.
What is bipolar disorder?
First, one needs to have a rough idea of what the illness entails, as to lay the grounds to what behaviours can be excused on its account. Bipolar disorder — type I, II or more mild cyclothymia — is defined by “dramatic shifts in a person’s mood, energy and ability to think clearly,” according to the National Alliance on Mental Illness.
“False beliefs or false perceptions” can also be a sign of bipolarism, according to Harvard Medical School, as well as an “exaggerated, puffed-up self-esteem,” one mirrored occasionally in almost all of Kanye’s tracks.
A timeline of West’s manifestations of bipolarism:
Impulsive Behaviour:Looking back at Kanye’s career, one will find a tons of examples that vouch for his impulsive practices. One could simply take the example of his stunt with Taylor Swift during her acceptance speech at the 2009 VMAs.
More concerning was the fact that Kanye wasn’t much apologetic after publicly humiliating Taylor in the star-studded event. Not only that, West proceeded to claim in a 2020 interview that God had told him to storm the stage.
In 2020, news of Kanye West running for president made waves on social media. This was only the start of a succession of incautious decisions that followed. During a presidential campaign rally in North Charleston, videos of Kanye West making several hysterical claims about being pro-life and publicized the debate he had with his then-wife Kim Kardashian on aborting their nine-year-old daughter, North West, when she was conceived surfaced.
In the months closer to the election, West spent a ton of his own money on the campaign which is a tell-tale sign of bipolar according to the International Bipolar Foundation.
Post-Traumatic Stress Manifestations:In the same year he announced his decision to run for the president, Kanye took to twitter to air some dirty laundry and gave a peek into his matrimonial troubles with Kim. The rapper claimed that he is been seeking divorce from Kim for a long time now and went on to accuse the Kardashian-Jenner clan of “white supremacy” and referred to his mother-in-law as “Kris Jong-Un.”
Kim, during that time, spoke up in support of Kanye, holding his disorder liable for his meltdown. She alluded in her statement that West’s “painful loss of his mother” triggered his episodes.
Manic Episodes:The twitter meltdowns of Kanye only worsened after his accusations on the Kardashian family.
In the same year, Kanye thrashed record labels in a series of tweets and accused them of having him locked into unfair contracts. He was eventually locked from his Twitter account for his unsolicited rants.
Meanwhile, things hadn’t been going well in Kanye’s personal life either. Rumors of his split from Kim made waves on social media and were soon validated after she officially filed for divorce during early 2021.
In October of the same year, Kim was seen hanging out with Pete Davidson – which Kanye expressed his open aversion to. After constantly professing his love for Kim on every public occasion, Kanye eventually turned his attention to Davidson and started attacking him on social media. Not only that, but there had also been many not-so-subtle threats to Pete through Donda, a Kanye West album.
The rapper accused the Skims founder of kidnapping their daughter, Chicago in an Instagram post and bashed Kim for not inviting him to their daughter’s birthday party.
Kanye has been vocal about his struggles with mental health and explained that during an episode, everything can feel like “a conspiracy.” In his new documentary, Jeen-yuhs: A Kanye Trilogy, Kanye revealed that at many moments, his mental health condition has enabled him to feel suicidal.
