The variance is the range of differences between all of the data points needed to calculate the statistical mean and the statistical mean itself. Or, the amount by which process performance deviates from the mean. Waste or faults are quantifiable product attributes that fall short of client expectations (i.e. defective products). In other words, any process performance that deviates from the established standard is viewed as waste or an error.
