Rory McIlroy of Northern Island has become the absolute powerhouse of the Wells Fargo Championship, a top-rated competition in the PGA Tour. Since his debut in 2010, he has won the title four times in 2015, 2021 and this year.
McIlroy put together two eagles, five birdies, one bogey and one double bogey in the fourth round of the tournament held at the Quail Holo Club (par 71) in Charlotte, North Carolina, the U.S. on the 13th (Korea time), and recorded a 6-under 65. McIlroy, who recorded a 17-under 267 total, beat Xander Schopley (U.S., 12-under 272), who led the way to the third round, by five strokes to receive $3.6 million (about 4.9 billion won) in prize money.안전놀이터 추천
McIlroy, who has grabbed a total of 26 PGA Tour wins, has secured four wins in this tournament alone. In addition, he won the Zurich Classic in pairs last month along with Shane Lowry of Ireland, and has lifted the trophy for two consecutive tournaments. It is the first time in 10 months that he has won an individual championship since the Genesis Scottish Open in July 2023.
McIlroy, who started second, one stroke behind Schauffley, made birdies in successive holes 8 and 9 (par 4) before grabbing an eagle at the 10th (par 5) to take the lead. After losing his No. 1 ranking, Schauffley faltered due to consecutive bogeys at the 12th (par 4) and 13th (par 3), and McIlroy escaped with birdies at the 13th and 14th (par 4) holes. He then immediately put his third bunker shot into the hole at the 15th (par 5), to solidify his win.
"People watched me win and grow in this tournament when I was 20 years old (2010)," McIlroy said after winning the championship, adding, "I was lucky to win this tournament four times."
Korean players have performed well by posting two names in the top five. Ahn shot five under par with seven birdies and two bogeys in the fourth round to finish third (9 under par 275). Lim, who narrowed the gap with No. 1 until the previous day, lost two strokes with four bogeys and two birdies, thus tying for fourth (6 under par 278).
Meanwhile, Rose Zhang of the U.S. topped the LPGA Tour for the first time in 11 months after preventing Nelly Koda of the U.S. from winning six consecutive championships. Zhang shot a 6-under 66 in the fourth round of the Cognizant Founders Cup on the day, winning the title with a total of 24-under 264.
At the Mizuho American Open in June last year, Jang set a new record of winning his debut title in 72 years, but won his second career title in 11 months. Koda, who had won five consecutive championships, failed to make it to the sixth consecutive win by tying for seventh (7-under 281). Korean players have failed to make it to the top 10 at all
