Art gallery exhibitions have become a popular choice of recreation these days. Irrespective of all the digital and technical influences, most art gallery exhibitions still manage to see a decent footfall. It is after all, always a wonder to see the intricate craft of different human beings in person, as compared to the screens of your smartphones. However, when it comes to the artists’ end, it can often be confusing for them to choose a popular theme. In this blog, we have covered some of the most commonly seen art themes in exhibitions to help you get an idea of what’s trending.

Types of Themes at Art Gallery Exhibitions

The themes of exhibitions can be divided into two categories, i.e. the basic themes and creative themes. The first is the general category which consists of basic themes with a great scope of interpretation. They are also the basis of all the other creative themes that you find in an art gallery exhibition. The creative themes on the other hand could be any theme based on the former themes. For example, women\'s empowerment, environment protection, animal rights, etc. These are the broader themes that are built on the foundation of basic themes such as landscapes, portraits, abstracts, etc.

For the sake of brevity, we are only covering the basic themes here.

  • Landscape

Landscape is one of the most commonly seen themes in any art exhibition. It is the craft of depicting different places, scenes, and scenery on the canvas. The theme can include cityscapes, seascapes, forests, or any other natural or man-made locations that inspire your creative wheel to roll. Landscapes artwork  mainly do not depict human beings in the picture and even if they do, they are just to add depth to the composition. They are not depicted as the focal point of the painting.

  • Wildlife/Animals

Wildlife as the name suggests is the depiction of animals and other creatures of the wilderness. However, it is again a very broad theme but generally does not consist of human beings in the frame. These artworks can also include insects or domestic animals depending upon the vision and discretion of the artists. Irrespective of the depiction, wildlife is a very popular theme in art gallery exhibitions and also a popular choice among art collectors.

  • Portrait

When an artwork is created to represent a specific human subject, it is called a portrait. It can be depicted on a canvas as a painting, as a sculptor, or even as a photograph out of many other mediums, The predominant focus in a portrait is on the facial features and the expressions of the subject, who is also known as a ‘sitter.’ However, there is no hard rule about drawing portraits of only human beings or limiting them only to their shoulders. You can also draw portraits of animals and depict the full body of your subject in the artwork. People often love to view and collect portraits of famous personalities from modern and ancient times, and that is what makes them such a popular theme at art gallery exhibitions.

  • Abstract

This is a more recently evolved school of art and mainly uses colors, lines, shapes, and patterns to convey the artist’s thoughts. It does not use any concrete subjects and that is why it is also known as a non-representational form of art because it does not represent an existing subject. This theme of art is always open to interpretations and can carry different meanings for different viewers. Artists often use this art to channel their inner thoughts and feelings and represent the same on canvas.

  • Figurative

Unlike abstract art, figurative paintings are derived from the real objects that we see around us. Since it depicts existing subjects, it is also called the representational form of art. While it has existed forever, it became a separate school of art only after abstractionism came into picture. The figurativism is also the art of storytelling without words. It is used to depict scenes and incidents through different mediums of art and can carry a unique meaning for every viewer.

Interpretation of Themes in Art Gallery Exhibition

An art gallery exhibition is one of the best places to experiment with and stretch your creative horizons. It gives you the freedom to explore every theme to the fullest and present your version of interpretation for a theme. When it comes to art, every theme is subjective and cannot be bounded by any specific definition. For example, an animal painting can also be a landscape painting, a figurative painting and also a portrait all at the same time, depending on the way an artist chooses to interpret it.
