Criticism has been mounting against the Korean national team and the Korea Football Association recently. Under coach Jurgen Klinsmann, the Korean national team experienced a painful failure in the 2023 Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Qatar Asian Cup. It suffered a complete defeat 0-2 in the match against Jordan in the semifinal. It even failed to become the original team as it collided with Lee Kang-in and Son Heung-min before the match.

In the end, the KFA dismissed Klinsmann. The KFA's power reinforcement committee concluded at a meeting that Klinsmann needs to be replaced. Realizing the seriousness of the situation after learning the news, KFA Chairman Chung Mong-kyu convened a meeting of KFA's key executives from 10 a.m. on April 16 at Gwanghwamun, Seoul, and announced the replacement of KFA head coach Klinsmann.

After holding a closed-door meeting with key executives, Chairman Chung Mong-gyu said, "Coach Klinsmann failed to display the coaching ability he wanted from the national team coach, such as the management of the game, the management of players, and the attitude of his work. He also decided to replace the coach based on the judgment that his competitiveness and sentiment as a coach did not reach the public and was difficult to improve."

Soccer fans criticized him not only for Klinsmann but also for Chung Mong-gyu. The Korea Football Association, which appointed Klinsmann, and Chung Mong-gyu, the general manager, also faced criticism from fans. On the previous day, a protest was held in front of the soccer center to demand Chung's resignation. A flower wreath used at a funeral home was also displayed at the soccer center.

Chairman Chung Mong-gyu said, "I am sorry to disappoint fans and the public by not meeting expectations at the Asian Cup. As the head of the team, I humbly accept and apologize for the criticism that is being put on me and the KFA. We will promptly appoint a new power reinforcement committee and chairman to proceed with the process of appointing a successor."

At the same time, when asked by reporters about his resignation, he said, "I am very interested in the term of office, but during the 2018 general meeting of the Korea Football Association, he proposed a restriction on the term of chairman for four consecutive terms. At that time, the Korean Sports Council and the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism did not accept it, and I think this is the answer," adding that he did not intend to serve a second term, but he made an excuse that he had no choice.

Since then, Chairman Chung Mong-gyu has appointed a new head of the Korea Power Enhancement Committee, Jeong Hae-sung. However, he has repeatedly been greedy this time around. Jeong Hae-sung, chairman of the Korea Power Enhancement Committee, concluded that he should appoint an incumbent coach of the K-League as an official coach. He was sharply criticized again this time. Ulsan HD supporters expressed their opposition in an official statement.

In the end, the Korea Football Association put its tail down. It appointed Hwang as interim coach. Hwang has come to bear the burden of taking charge of both the Olympic team and the A team. Still, soccer fans' anger is lingering. A boycott was expected ahead of the 2026 North-Central America World Cup Asian regional preliminary match against Thailand at Sangam World Cup Stadium in Seoul on the 21st.

Indeed, Saisamil, which has more than 80,000 YouTube subscribers, posted a photo on Instagram titled "Please leave your seat," saying, "KFA President Chung Mong-gyu has pushed players to the brink for his own personal gain. The players have no choice but to remain silent. Now we act on behalf of the players." A post encouraging boycott was also posted on "Epem Korea," one of the largest soccer communities in Korea.

The Red Devils, however, have chosen to empower their players. The Red Devils said, "The essence of the Red Devils is to cheer for the Korean national soccer team. The moment they get out of that essence, the Red Devils have no reason to exist. This is the KFA's fault, and there is no reason why players on the field shouldn't be cheered."
