What exactly is a Personal Protection Order In Singapore?

In Singapore, a Personal Protection Order is an order issued by the family court. Its objective is to safeguard a spouse who is the victim of domestic violence.

Section 64 of the Women's Charter (Chapter 353) defines family violence as follows:

Intentionally or consciously putting, or attempting to put, a family member in fear or harm; unjustly confining or restraining a family member against his will; or creating continuous harassment with the intent to cause, or knowing that it is likely to cause, anguish to a family member.

Is only physical violence considered in cases of domestic violence?

Intimidation, threatening behavior, harassment, mocking, dominating, confining, or restricting a person's freedom of movement are all examples of psychological abuse. This is not an exhaustive list.

What is the procedure for obtaining a Personal Protection Order In Singapore?

Your attorney will file a petition with the family court to stop further occurrences of domestic violence. If the court determines that family violence has occurred or is likely to occur on the balance of probabilities, an order to protect the complainant will be issued.

What happens if the court's order is disobeyed?

You have the option of reporting a violation of the order to the police. The offender can be arrested and charged with the crime if the police have enough evidence.

Available protection Orders:

One or more of the following protection orders can be issued by the Family Justice Courts.

1. In Singapore, there is a Personal Protection Order.
2. Singapore Expedited Order
3. In Singapore, there is a Domestic Exclusion Order.
4. Order for Counseling.

All of these protection orders in Singapore shall be referred to as PPO from now on.

How Long Does a PPO Take to Get?

If the respondent agrees with the complaint, obtaining a PPO could take as little as two months. Otherwise, it could take 3 to 6 months for the case to be heard in court and a PPO granted.

Is a Lawyer Required for a PPO Application?

In a strict sense, no. A lawyer, on the other hand, may offer you the essential guidance and ensure that the documents are properly presented, enhancing your chances of receiving a PPO (or successfully defending against a PPO application).
