Shea butter is a fat derived from the seeds of the shea tree. East and West tropical Africa are home to the shea tree. Shea butter is derived from two oily kernels found within the shea tree seed. The kernel is removed from the seed and ground into a powder before being boiled in water. The butter then rises to the surface of the water and solidifies.
Shea Butter acts as an emollient. It may soften or smooth dry skin. Shea butter also contains anti-inflammatory properties. This could aid in the treatment of skin conditions associated with swelling, such as eczema.
