Tennis shoes and running shoes are nearly interchangeable, right? From traction to needing to be heavier for stability, here are a few significant differences between tennis shoes and running shoes.
Tread Pattern
The tread pattern is the first, easiest way to see a difference between the two. Herringbone pattern is very common on tennis shoes as it provides the traction needed for quick lateral movements. You can see this on a pair of Nike Vapor 12 shoes, for example, which is meant for a clay court. The sole is usually flat to keep the feet stable and prevent ankle rolling. Running shoes have soles and treads meant for shock absorption and cushioning, with a curved sole and a pattern to grip road or trail.
Weight for Stability
Running shoes tend to be lightweight, making it easier to move your feet. However, that comes at the cost of stability. Tennis shoes are often heavier than running shoes but give more support and stability to your feet. You need that stability when bouncing around the court, while you don’t need it for running.
Flexibility
If you’ve been playing tennis in your running shoes, you’ve probably realized they’re too flexible. Quick, lateral movements need a rigid shoe for ankle support, like Nike Vapor tennis shoes, or you risk injury. Tennis shoes are rigid by design. There is little lateral movement when running, so you want more flexible shoes so your foot moves naturally. Running shoes are much too flexible for tennis courts.
Durability
Both types of shoes should be durable, but tennis shoes need to withstand far more wear and tear from courts. Tennis courts, whether clay, hard, or grass, are hard on shoes. Running shoes are designed for trails or running on roads and don’t need to be as durable. Instead, you'll likely find a breathable mesh to keep your feet cool while running.
