When the moment finally arrives to deliver the baby, being prepared with a fully packed hospital bag can make all the difference. Having everything you need on hand not only helps you feel more relaxed and confident but also allows the process to go more smoothly for everyone involved—especially you. Here’s a helpful guide to packing your hospital go bag as a surrogate.

Important Documents

As soon as you arrive at the hospital, staff will need your insurance documents, a valid ID like your driver’s license, and any paperwork or birth plan intended for the intended parents. Keeping all of these items in a dedicated folder makes check-in faster and less stressful. Don’t forget any contact information for your agency or the intended parents—having it handy can be helpful during updates or emergencies.

Comfort Items

Staying as comfortable as possible during labor and recovery can do wonders for your well-being. Pack a pillow from home, a soft bathrobe, and cozy slippers to help make your hospital room feel a little more like your own space. A few favorite snacks, gum, and a reusable water bottle are great additions to keep your energy up and ensure hydration throughout your stay.

Clothing

Comfortable clothing deserves its own spotlight. Make sure to pack plenty of underwear (including a few extra pairs), supportive bras, and one or two nightgowns that are sleeveless or short-sleeved—these make it easier for medical staff to check your vitals. For your going-home outfit, bring loose maternity clothes that fit you around months six or seven of pregnancy. Your body will still be in recovery mode, so comfort is key.

Toiletries

You’ll want to feel refreshed, especially after delivery. Bring chapstick, lotion, a toothbrush and toothpaste, and travel-size shampoo, conditioner, and body wash. While hospitals provide basic maternity pads, packing your own—especially a more absorbent, comfortable brand—can improve your recovery experience. Flip-flops are also great for the shower or walking around your room, and they’re easy to tuck into your toiletries pouch.

Electronics

Staying connected and entertained during your stay is important. Be sure to pack your phone, charger, tablet, or even a laptop. These devices can help you keep in touch with the intended parents, your agency, and loved ones. Don’t forget headphones and a portable charger to stay powered up when outlets are limited.

Postpartum Recovery Items

After delivery, your body will need some TLC. Consider including items like a peri bottle, witch hazel pads, nipple cream (if you're pumping), and a postpartum belly band. Adult diapers or high-waisted postpartum underwear are also a smart addition for comfort and support. While the hospital will supply some items, having your own can offer a sense of familiarity.

Extras for Downtime

There will be moments of quiet in between the excitement. Bring along a good book, a journal to capture your thoughts, or a playlist of calming music to help pass the time and relax. An eye mask or light blanket can also make it easier to nap if you're staying overnight.

Gifts and Keepsakes

If you’ve planned a special moment with the intended parents, consider packing a small token or keepsake. This could be a framed ultrasound image, a heartfelt note, or a meaningful gift that reflects the journey you’ve shared. These small touches can add a deep emotional layer to an already unforgettable day.

Emotional Support Items

This journey is as emotional as it is physical. Bringing along items that provide emotional comfort can be incredibly grounding. Whether it’s a handwritten letter from a loved one, a calming essential oil roller, a sentimental bracelet, or even a stress ball, small things that remind you of your strength and purpose can be powerful. Don’t hesitate to include something that brings you peace and reassurance during this life-changing moment.
