Most leprosy cases are treatable. Leprosy treatment is based on the type of leprosy, and sixteen million people with the disease have been cured in the preceding 20 years. Antibiotics are used to treat the infection. Typically, six months to a year of long-term treatment are advised by doctors. One might need to take antibiotics for a longer time if they have severe leprosy. On the other hand, leprosy-related nerve damage cannot be repaired by antibiotics.
A common leprosy treatment known as MDT (multidrug therapy) requires the patient to take two or more drugs, the majority of which are antibiotics.
