Batteries may serve the same purpose, but they aren’t made equal. Before picking a lithium deep cycle battery or any other battery type, you’ll want to know what you’ll use it for. Some battery types are more suitable for a specific purpose but may be unsuitable for another. For instance, if you’re powering a motor that requires a short burst of high-level power, you’ll need a starter battery. But if you require consistent power to run something much longer, consider a deep cycle battery.

Uses of deep cycle batteries

Anything that requires continuous power for extended periods will need a deep cycle battery. These include electric golf carts and forklifts, navigational devices on boats, renewable energy systems, and trolling motors.

Types of deep cycle batteries

Deep cycle batteries may have the same function but vary in their chemistry and materials used to build them. Each has its advantages and disadvantages. The main options include flooded lead-acid, AGM and gel, and the lithium deep cycle battery.

Flooded lead-acid

Lead-acid deep cycle batteries are the oldest type of power source still prominently used today. They have a liquid electrolyte consisting of sulfuric acid and water, so they must be positioned upright with excellent ventilation because they produce hydrogen gas. And due to their liquid content, they need the most maintenance, such as replenishing the water and removing the acid residue from the battery terminals and covers. These batteries also tend to be heavy, although their battery weight doesn’t equal the amount of energy they can provide.

Gel and AGM

AGM and gel are other versions of lead-acid batteries that don’t require flee-flowing liquid electrolytes and water replenishment. Gel batteries have a gelled electrolyte, and AGM uses an electrolyte absorbed in a glass matt. They won’t release gases with proper use and recharging, but overpressure can cause the safety valve to release the buildup.

Lithium-ion

The lithium deep cycle battery is considered the most efficient and reliable. It charges faster, requires no maintenance, and can be discharged deeply without affecting its lifespan. Despite the higher upfront costs, deep cycle lithium batteries are more efficient and last longer, making them more cost-effective in the long run.

If you’re considering a lithium deep cycle battery, make sure it’s lithium-iron-phosphate (LiFePO4). It’s lightweight, safer to use, longer-lasting, and provides twice the usable energy of a lead-acid battery.
