Ringing in the ears, medically known as tinnitus, is a disturbing health condition that affects millions of people all over the world. It can be heard as a constant humming, hissing, whistling, or ringing in one or both ears. Periodic tinnitus may not be anything to worry about, but constant noise in your ears can be a sign of an underlying condition that seriously affects quality of life. At Wavefront Centre, we offer special help to those dealing with tinnitus and can assist in returning your hearing comfort and clarity.

Ringing in the ears may be due to the following reasons:

There may be dozens of reasons you can develop ringing in the ears. It is frequently a result of loud noise exposure (concerts, construction work) or DJ-ing shows with the headphones maxed for hours on end. If we already have impaired hearing, a common cause of tinnitus, the brain may scramble to fill in the gaps. And like our brains, the ear has less “excitability” as it gets older; as a result, damaged inner ears or aging structures such as those surrounding the cochlea (“the bones”) make us more susceptible to tinnitus.

Medical tinnitus causes for certain people, certain medical issues can lead to hearing noises in the ears, including ear infections or a build-up of fluid, high or low blood pressure, and even some medications. Stress and fatigue are also amplifiers of the ringing, emphasizing what matters and what should be taken into consideration when treating this symptom in a more global aspect.

How Wavefront Centre Can Help

At Wavefront Centre, our audiologists take an ‘open-ended’ view of tinnitus interventions. A full audiology assessment of your hearing is made to determine the cause and level of your tinnitus. Based on the findings of this assessment, our staff formulates a personalized care plan. Treatments range from sound therapy/app-based treatment to acoustically programmed hearing aids to counselling that basically helps you manage your stress and sleep better. For all these patients, our goal is to diminish some of the all-too-frequent ringing in the ears that can rob them of their concentration, comfort, and peace of mind.
